Mind Map – Awareness of Residential Schools

This is the written part of a Mind Map that I made which follows my learning journey about Residential Schools, in particular the organizations that are working to bring awareness to Residential Schools and reconciliation to Indigenous peoples. I think this is an incredibly important topic that should be discussed in all classrooms.

Project of Heart

  • Seeking truth about Residential Schools and acknowledging the extent of loss to former students, families and communities.
  • Commemorating the lives of the thousands of Indigenous children who died from Residential Schools
  • Call Canadians to action to change our present and future history

Legacy of Hope Foundation

  • A national Indigenous-led, charitable organization
  • Goal: Educating and raising awareness of the Residential School System

The Witness Blanket

  • “The blanket is a universal symbol of protection. For many of us, it identifies who we are and where we’re from – we wear them in ceremony and give them as gifts. Blankets protect our young and comfort our elders.”
  • Inspired by a woven blanket, The Witness Blanket is an art installation.
  • It is made from items reclaimed from Residential Schools, churches, government buildings, etc… from all across Canada

Benefits of these Projects

  • A deeper understanding of Residential Schools and their impacts on families and communities
  • A step towards reconciliation
  • Acknowledging the history and trauma of Residential Schools
  • Creating equal relationships
  • Healing
  • A voice of Indigenous concern to address problems
