Hi Jillian,
I really enjoyed your reflection through your video especially the one about the mother using cash and the cashier struggling to give back the correct change. It’s such a simple yet powerful example of how we’re losing touch with everyday skills that used to be second nature.
I agree with the debaters and with your point about the importance of manual skills, especially in fields like nursing where accurate charting and scripting are critical. These tasks are life-saving responsibilities that rely on strong foundational skills.
Spelling, for instance, does more than just help us write correctly. It connects the brain to the pronunciation of words and strengthens reading and writing. It activates the language and literacy parts of our brain, which are essential not just for communication but also for cognitive development.
I truly believe that being innovative doesn’t mean being completely reliant on technology. Success in the modern world requires a solid foundation of basic skills, like math, spelling, and handwriting, combined with smart use of technology as a tool, not a crutch.
Foundational skills are not outdated; they’re more relevant than ever. We need to continue teaching them in schools while also integrating technology to make learning more effective. In fact, technology should be a support system to strengthen and enhance these essential basics, not replace them.
If we don’t teach these everyday life skills, what is the true worth of formal education? Let’s not lose the basics in the name of convenience.

Thanks Sarada… I appreciate you listening to my blog. I think that these everyday skills have been somewhat lost and or replaced with technology. I literally laugh when my mom pays with cash…. people are shocked when she passes them money… hahah
