The Importance of Digital Citizenship Today

I see digital Citizenship as a very important concept to teach in my future class. Our world today relies so much on technology and the access to tools and information that comes with it. As we continue to grow older and the world keeps changing technology is only going to be advancing further. As a future teacher I see the importance of educating my students on their digital citizenship. Jason Ohler  talks about how as teachers it is our job to help the students integrate their digital tools into Our classrooms in creative and useful ways and I could not agree more. It is our chance as educators to help integrate technology into the students lives and teach them how they can use it in safe and impactful ways of learning.

As stated in Mark Ribbles article, remembering the impact of digital access is so important as a teacher.  This is the first of nine elements of digital citizenship and the one that I find the most important in order to build a good foundation in the classroom.  I will make sure that I am always remembering that access to technology and resources differ from school to school and household to household. As a teacher I will always know the importance of making lessons that allow everyone the same access to the information.

Digital etiquette is one other very important element that I as a teacher really want to establish. It has now become a lifelong skill that every person should be able to understand in the digital world we live in today.  I believe that having it as a standard from the very beginning of the school year and making sure that students understand how to be safe and respectful members of the community while they are online is so crucial. This should be a skill taught from a young age so that nobody runs into any issues later on.  I will take it as a building point and build upon it during the year.
