Karissa Beck

I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Karissa, and I live on my family farm, where my husband and I are gradually taking over its operations. We have two young children—a six-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son—who keep us on our toes with their various activities.

I have a passion for reading, outdoor adventures across all seasons, summers at the lake, baking, and contributing to the work on our family farm. In addition to these interests, I am a middle years teacher and am currently pursuing my Master of Education in the Teaching, Leading, and Learning program.

Week Two Learning Project Update – Crustopher.

Update #2 on Crustopher… Wow, did I seriously underestimate the complexity of sourdough! I had no idea the level of passion, science, and dedication required to create a new starter. Honestly, I’m feeling a little overwhelmed this week. To help, I joined a Facebook group for beginner sourdough bakers, and it’s been a game-changer. I’ve never posted questions in a Facebook group before, so stepping out of my comfort zone has been a big deal for me—but the insights I’ve gotten have been incredibly helpful. I think.

This week marks one week with Crustopher, and let me tell you, it’s been a rollercoaster. He stopped doubling in size and actually stopped growing altogether. I’ve switched up my approach: I’m now measuring in grams instead of cups, put him in a new jar, and have reduced the amount of water I’m feeding him. The experts say this is normal and that he’s just going through the different stages of development. I figured out I had been using too much water before, so switching to grams has helped me avoid that problem. The starter is finally starting to show signs of the texture I need for baking, though I’m definitely giving him at least another week to fully develop and get back on track with growth.

I’ve also been doing some research on the tools I’ll need once Crustopher is ready for baking. Here are a few items I plan to purchase, though I want to do a little more research on the baking products before pulling the trigger.

Thanks for following along this journey with me so far. If you have any sourdough starter tips and tricks please send them my way.

Week One Update.

Crustopher is thriving (I think)! Starting the sourdough journey has been more challenging than I initially imagined. He began on Thursday, January 16th, but showed no growth on the 17th or 18th. After consulting with a friend, I decided to feed him with 1/2 cup of unbleached flour and 1/2 cup of warm water. I placed him on a cloth and wrapped the jar in a tea towel, which led to noticeable growth the next day. On the 19th and again tonight, the 20th, I discarded half of the starter and replenished it with 1/2 cup of unbleached flour and 1/2 cup of warm water. I’ve also ensured he’s kept in a warm spot to encourage fermentation.

I love watching YouTube videos to learn this whole process. This video is another cool video about feeding the sourdough starter process.

Welcome

Before diving into my first blog post, I’d like to take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Karissa, and I live on my family farm, where my husband and I are gradually taking over its operations. We have two young children—a six-year-old daughter and a four-year-old son—who keep us on our toes with their various activities.

My Relationship with Social Media

My relationship with social media has evolved significantly through different phases of life. My earliest memories involve MSN Messenger, back when I had to plead with my parents to use the dial-up connection. As I progressed through high school, Facebook gained popularity, and I eagerly joined to stay connected with friends.

During university, Facebook remained my primary social media platform. Now, as an adult, I find myself using social media more than ever. Instagram and Snapchat are my most frequently used platforms. I communicate with close friends and family on Snapchat, while Instagram serves as a creative outlet and source of inspiration (though it occasionally tempts my credit card).

I still use Facebook occasionally to keep in touch with distant family, and I use X (or Twitter, as I still refer to it) mainly for professional purposes. I have yet to join the TikTok trend, mainly because I simply don’t have the time.

The Impact of Social Media on My Life

Reflecting on how social media has influenced my life, I realize it has had both positive and negative effects. Professionally, social media has been positive—I’ve built valuable networks, collaborated with new colleagues, and gained fresh teaching resources and ideas, which have revitalized my work.

On a personal level, the journey has been more complex. Social media offers a wonderful way to stay connected with friends and family, but it can also have downsides. The curated perfection often seen online can sometimes impact my mental health, leading me to take breaks to remind myself of the “Instagram vs. reality” perspective.

In balancing these experiences, I’ve learned the importance of mindful consumption and taking time to disconnect when needed.
