“Cooking My Own Way”
For the final stop in my #LearningProject cooking journey around the world, I visited the United States, and what better way to celebrate than with the all-American classic: homemade burgers and a fun dessert twist, deep-fried Oreos.
After five weeks of following recipes, testing apps, and learning from others both virtually and in-person, I decided it was time to trust myself. For the burgers, I didn’t follow a single recipe. Instead, I researched a few different sources (links below), took what I liked from each, and created my own version. This was a major milestone for me it felt like the culmination of everything I’ve learned so far.

@fosterfeasts HOMEMADE CHEESEBURGER PATTY RECIPE: 1lb lean ground beef 1 egg 1/4 cup bread crumbs 1 tbsp dried onion flakes 1/2 tsp garlic powder 1/4 tsp cracked pepper 1/2 cup shredded cheese . This will make about 5x 4oz patties. #burger #budgethack #homemade #eatbeef #beef #cheeseburgers
I made a video of my process but forgot to record myself seasoning the meat before adding in an egg and cheese. For my own burgers I grabbed 2 lbs of ground beef, marble cheese, salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder and onion powder. I eyeballed all my measurements but added in a good amount of paprika and garlic powder.
Above is the video I made of me making my homemade burgers!

A Sweet Ending: Deep-Fried Oreos
For dessert, I wanted something fun and unmistakably American. I landed on deep-fried Oreos. I found a short TikTok recipe that looked easy and only required a few ingredients.
@matthewinthekitchen DEEP FRIED OREOS! Such a healthy snack….oh wait nvm #fyp #baking #oreos #oreo #friedoreo #recipe #easyrecipe #deepfried #fried #friedoreos #cooking
The above video is what I followed. What my partner and I created ended up being crispy, gooey, sweet, and reminded me of deep fried Oreos from the Fair or Queen City Ex. This was a fun treat and a great way to end the project on a playful note.

Reflection: What I’ve Learned
This final week felt like a turning point. Instead of relying fully on outside instruction, I was confident enough to blend ideas, improvise a bit, and make a dish that felt like mine.
Over the six weeks of this learning project, I’ve explored:
-
New cooking methods (slow cooking, pan frying, marinating)
-
New digital tools (Tasty, TikTok, YouTube)
-
Cultural traditions and ingredients from around the world
-
What works best for me as a learner: visual, hands-on, and often informal resources like TikTok and YouTube
- How to edit and create a video using Capcut
This week showed me just how far I’ve come. From nervous pasta-making to confidently creating my own burger recipe, I now feel much more at ease in the kitchen, and I’m excited to keep experimenting even beyond the scope of this project.
Wow Kyler this food looks amazing! It is so amazing all the different ethnic food you have cooked over this journey and I’m glad you finished off with some delicious American food. I am so glad you have became so confident as you have progressed. What was your favourite food to make from this journey and what one was your favourite to eat?
Thanks for sharing!
Grace
Hi Grace thank you for the kind words and response! I think my favourite dish to eat was week 3 the Carne Asada Tacos The fresh rolls were also up there as a favourite to eat. I think my favourite to make was the Tbishi with my mother in law because it connected to my partners culture and it was nice to spend some one on one time with her.
