Culturally Relevant Pedagogy – November 16
Culturally relevant pedagogy should be something that is known in schools and should be necessary. Future students have the right to receive this form of education. Instruction that perceives and praises their personalities, lived encounters, and culture. An education that nurtures their intrinsic brilliance and limitless ability. It will become increasingly important to separate ourselves from existing colonial perspectives and teaching methods as we continue to improve and grow as a society. It is crucial to make the classroom as inclusive and culturally appropriate as possible. No student should ever feel uncomfortable or even unsafe in the classroom. As I may have students in my classroom from all over, I must try to correctly share their views. Every student will be accepted into my classroom, and all students will accept each other. By sharing my views or even the most common societal views, but views from many cultures and peoples, I intend to make every lesson as inclusive as possible. Since starting my education journey, I have always wanted a very inclusive classroom; it is essential. I want every student to feel like their opinions are valued and valuable. That the ideas of those around them are just as authentic and relevant, so in order to able to make educated decisions, it is vital to look at problems from different perspectives.
No matter their race, cultural background, or family background, every student will always be accepted in my classroom. Place-based education implies developing a sense of understanding and culture. This sense of acceptance and culture will be promoted by using music, food, guest speakers, literature and videos. There are many ways of learning from a wide range of backgrounds. Each student could bring something that represents their culture and share it with the class. I may ask family members of the family if they would be willing to share their families’ stories. They could either be oral or written, whatever way they would feel most comfortable doing it. I want to be able to have potlucks, where students will bring traditional dishes.
Hi Kennedie, you certainly have a lot of ideas for your future classroom. I am glad that one of your priorities is that your students feel comfortable and safe in your classroom, and that you have a plan to make sure this is a reality. Your recognition that all your students views are important is good, but even better is your commitment to understanding those views so that you can accurately share them in your classroom. You have so many ideas, it will be exciting to see you teach in the future. Perhaps in the mean time you could think of a few concrete ways that you can bring in other cultures into your classroom. Rather than planning to bring in music, you could find songs of other cultures that you might bring into your classroom, or books written from non-colonial perspectives that you want to have your students read.
