Fun on Scratch!

For our assigned blog post, I decided to play around on scratch. I have used this software before during my internship. My cooperating teacher and I actually attended the EYES workshop where they send a sub for the day and you get to learn about and play with their different technology. I was able to play around and learn how to use the Makey Makeys, and the different robots they have. It was an awesome experience and they send you back to your classroom with some tech to try out with your students.

What I learned on Scratch

  • How to changed the appearance of my sprite
  • How to make the sprite move through space
  • How to make the sprite talk

Here is a video of the scratch project that I made. I will say that I really am not the best at coding, so it took me quite a while to even program 15 seconds of my sprite doing things.

I believe that scratch and coding have a lot to offer in the classroom and should be incorporated into projects. Students in the younger grades may struggle with learning this technology, but students in grade 5 and up would easily be able to learn it.

I think that coding is an important skill for students to learn because many jobs utilize coding and it is an ever growing field in today’s technological world. Scratch is an easy and fun way for students to start learning coding at a young age, so they can become more efficient with it as time goes on. Scratch also provides a creative outlet and maker space for students to create anything they want, which is an activity that will motivate and engage students.

  1. cool code, I like how you mentioned the grade level and how the technological world is always growing!

  2. I did laugh out loud a little with this one haha “I want to levitate now”. I do agree that this kind of skill is almost necessary at a young age, so it is not so intimidating for students once they get into older grades!
