Progressive Education

Hip Hop being used in pedagogy is a step forward in progressive education. By catering to students interests and using it in a way to encourage social justice can make a huge difference. Hip hop tackles large issues throughout such as racial inequality, classism and more. Using something such as hip hop in education takes research, defending to the school board, and including students in the process. This is a different way to teach about major issues, but can be incredibly successful if done well.

In the article, the main praxis hip hop was used for was to discuss racism. Many hip hop artists have been very open with their experience with racism and how their claim to fame was more difficult because of racism. By using hip hop in critical pedagogy, it helps to make students aware of racial inequality, how it affects people of colour and how it is prominent in the school system. This is an effective way to make students aware of social justice issues in all aspects. Students are already listening to hip hop and rap music. But, by shining a light on it and focusing on what they are saying in regards to inequality helps broaden their understanding.

Hip hop is a very effective tool in catching students attention. It being used in school is unusual and unexpected. This will pique their interest and add more excitement to learning. By using what music students are listening to to strengthen their critical consciousness, they will be more likely to pay attention.

  3. Hello Laina,
I really liked your statement specifying how hip-hop specifically should be incorporated. And to specify, I really enjoyed how you stated it should be done well. Emphasizing this is important as there are many different ways to go about it, and if not done correctly, could end badly for either side. Although I feel we need to pinpoint what exactly makes hip-hop pedagogy done well. Thank you for this response.
