Differentiation and Adaptations

As a future educator, I believe that every students deserves to be treated equally, feel valued and included. In today’s diverse classrooms, ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL. Differentiation is an approach where teaching is adapted to meet the needs, interests, and abilities of every student. Shelley Moore in her video on “The Evolution of Inclusion” says that “breathing the same air is not enough”, which means sharing a physical space does not create a sense of belonging (Moore, 2018, 2:58).

In the past, students with disabilities were isolated in separate institutions which is a clear example of exclusion. Then, integration meant placing all students in the same room, but simply being together in the same space doesn’t mean it makes them feel included and valued. Today, we aim for true inclusion, where every student actively participates in the classroom, feels connected and included. Looking at the history of inclusion, I think we have come a long way, but it is important to remember that inclusion is a continuous process, just like education is a lifelong journey, we are always learning and trying to do better.

To create an inclusive classroom environment, I will focus on four adaptive dimensions which are environment, instruction, assessment, and resources.

Environment

I will design my classroom to be safe, welcoming, and adaptable. I will arrange my classroom with flexible seating options and quiet corners to make sure that each student has a comfortable space to learn that suits them best. I will encourage students to be welcoming and treat each other with respect. I will also decorate the classroom with student posters or other work to make the classroom feel like a positive space as soon as students walk in.

Instruction

Every students learns in their own way and it is important to use a variety of teaching methods to meet every student’s needs. I will use visual cues, segment instructions, and tech tools to make learning more engaging and suitable for everyone. I will use simple language, examples, and demonstrations to help all students understand the material.

Assessment

Assessments are not just quizzes or tests, they are opportunities for students to show what they have learned in different ways. If students learn differently,  why should they be assessed in the same way? Instead of expecting all students to write an essay, I will offer choices like written reports, presentations, or creative projects so that each student can demonstrate their understanding in a way that shows their strengths. Another good example of giving students a choice is to have a bronze, silver and gold assignment options. Students decide how they want to be challenged.

Resources

Every student need different tools and resources to succeed. I will provide a variety of tools like digital tools, books, assistive technologies to make sure that all students have access to the materials they need to learn.  It also give students a chance to choose the resources that best help them understand and explore the content.

Inclusion is not just about being physically present in the room but it is about actively participating and feeling connected. As a teacher, I want to create a classroom where all students feel valued, supported, and empowered.
