Putting it Together

Over the past three weeks, I’ve immersed myself in the world of pickleball. From learning the basics to mastering advanced techniques, this journey has been both challenging and rewarding. In this final post, I will share the general flow of a pickleball match and the improvements I’ve noticed in my game.

Over the period of 3 weeks of learning pickleball there are several self-improvements I have noticed, these include: technical skills, strategic understanding, physical fitness, and my overall mental game while in a match.

Pickleball: Types of Serves

Within pickleball the serving team has a major advantage in gaining points. Mastering the art of serving can be complex and at times difficult. The YouTube video attached in this post helped me gain vast knowledge on the different types of pickleball serves and how to master them. The types of serves that I will further educate you all on include Screwball serves, sidespin serve, and the topspin serve.

General Rules of Pickleball

Within this post I will be discussing the general rules of pickleball an individual should know when participating or watching a match. This post will outline the five general rules, these rules include: starting the game, scoring within the game, the double bounce rule, non-volley zone, faults and how a team wins the match. I discovered this information in a more in-depth PDF created by Pickleball Canada that was created in 2010 but updated yearly since.

Using AI in Pickleball

Spring in Regina this year has been full of rain, mud and days stuck inside. There were countless days where I had intentions to pick my stuff up, head outside and get to the pickleball court, but the Sask Skies had a plan of their own. Through the interactive Weather Assistant tool built into the Environment Canada Weather app, I was able to do this in the morning without even having to leave my bed. I was able to see if we had clear, sunny skies or thunder clouds brewing! All I had to do was ask if today was pickleball weather or not, and this spring unfortunately many of the days were not pickleball weather!

An Equipment Mishap

When I first decided to take up pickleball, I was aware that the cost of equipment could vary significantly. Initially, I opted for a $20 set from Winners. However, one of the paddles broke during our third game, snapping as my partner went for the game-winning point. After this incident, we went to Sport Chek and invested in a $130 set. Although it seemed expensive at first, I was thoroughly enjoying the game, so the investment felt justified. So far, it has proven to be a worthwhile purchase.

Acquiring the Right Tools for the Job

When diving into a new sport as an athlete or coach potato it is important to have the right tools for the job! As a newcomer to pickleball,  I researched the equipment needed to play this sport to the best of my abilities! The equipment I found that were essential to have for success included: pickleball paddles, pickleball balls, court shoes, proper shoes and access to public courts (Ana, 2024).  In this blog I will show you how I guided myself through picking these tools!

Learning Pickleball!

Image taken from Google.

For my learning project, I have decided to learn how to play pickleball! This includes learning all the individual skills needed to play as well as the technical and rules side of the sport.

At this point (2 weeks into the semester), I have started to be able to properly hit the ball, aim and I am now working on applying pressure/strength to hit the ball further and harder.  I began with familiarizing myself with the sport by googling the rules and regulations, and then went to the court to began rallying around. From here, I tried many different techniques and strategies that I had seen done in my previous research. I have also played a few full games of pickleball, even winning one!
