Volunteering

Throughout middle and high school I did quite a bit of volunteering. When I was in grade six I founded a program with my friend called History Kids. It was an after school program ran at my local museum. The program was directed at grade three students and taught them about the history of our town.

In grade seven, my school hosted the Special Olympics. My peers and I spent out time making individual posters for each athlete. Once the posters were made, we spent the day cheering for our athlete. We followed them to each event and cheered them on. It was a great experience meeting our athletes and spending the day watching them compete.

In grade nine through twelve, I volunteered with a club called C.H.U.M.S. This program was ran at my local elementary school and was programmed for grades one to five. C.H.U.M.S was created for students that are high risk and in vulnerable situations. It was many hours of hard work to create relationships with these students but once they were strong relationships you could really watch each child grow.

How does volunteering change our perception of the community and world around us?
