ASL: ABC’S
For the beginning of my journey toward learning American Sign Language (ASL), I decided to fully learn the alphabet! I thought that it would have been a bit more complicated, however, this beginner ASL Alphabet Youtube video that I found created by Laura Berg Life made it super simple and easy to learn the whole alphabet in less than 20 minutes!
I also downloaded a picture of the alphabet in ASL onto my phone to help me if I ever forget or feel the need to look back quickly! I am going to continue to practice over and over the alphabet so it will be forever stuck in my brain and easily done by my fingers! I am going to continue to search for more simple, but effective videos and other resources to help me learn as a beginner, but for now, I am very thrilled with the progress I have made and feel very confident in the direction I am going!
I have created a short video showing myself signing the alphabet with the video in the background that I learned from! I’m super excited to be learning this new language and it encourages me to want to learn more due to the fact that I know by myself learning ASL, I can potentially help and connect with others in the future!
I have also been researching on Pinterest, as well as other websites online for different options rather than just youtube to learn from! Feel free to let me know if you as a reader know of any great sites or resources I should look into! The input is appreciated greatly!
My goal for next week :
- learn numbers 1-10 using free videos from Youtube
- understand simple greetings such as “hello” and “good-bye”
You are doing great! I am also learning ASL and I have really enjoyed it so far. I am not sure if you plan to learn numbers, but if you do, I am interested to see if our number signs look the same as there can sometimes be different variations of the same number.
Such a great job Jasmin! I loved your video as I was able to practice the signs along with you, pause when needed, and even rewatch a few times to really get the alphabet down! It is super interesting to me how everyone learns the oral alphabet at such a young age (many of us both English and French), and we are then able to recite it for the rest of our lives. I am curious how memorizing the ASL alphabet will compare!
Hello Jasmin!
It looks like you have learned quite a bit so far! This is how I started out learning as well. Megan is exactly correct, your video is so helpful to follow along with. Great job so far!
ASL is such a great learning project choice! I have seen a number of students in our class have chosen ASL and it certainly will be something nice to have a background on going into the education world. I once worked with a fellow who is deaf, and he had an interpreter come into our office to help him teach ASL to anyone who wanted to join in after work hours. I loved learning the letters and being able to learn a few things directly from someone in the community and I know he appreciated the effort his colleagues took as well! This might be a lofty question as you’re just beginning, but do you think you will go further with you learning of ASL outside of this class?
