Lesson Plans

Throughout my field experience, I had a few opportunities to teach a lesson in the classroom. Students in the grade seven and eight classroom I was in were working on a mindfulness project- they were learning about mindfulness and working on developing a mindfulness room for their school.

To help students with this project, I developed a lesson that would help them understand what mindfulness is, what activities are mindful, how to practice mindfulness, and why mindfulness is important/beneficial.

While developing this lesson, I used feedback from my cooperating teacher to improve it. This helped me to realize the components of a lesson, what goes in to lesson planning, and how to develop lessons that will keep students engaged.

When teaching this lesson, I realized how hard it is to keep track of time, something important to proper planning and effective time management. In the future, when working with students and helping to teach some of my co-operating teacher’s lessons, I paid more attention to time and made sure that I was on track, trying to stay within the time allotment I had to teach the lesson.

In addition to learning time management skills, I learned how to improvise when put on the spot by students and how to effectively deliver a lesson. There are many components when teaching that need to be paid attention to such as: how engaged the students are, if students are understanding what you are explaining, how much time you are using, outside factors, and making sure you are teaching the proper curriculum/content, sticking to your objective for the lesson. These components were all things that I learned to keep track of and pay attention to while teaching my lessons.
