And sew it begins

And sew it begins

Here is a fun video I made of my first time trying out the sewing machine.

So, I started off this journey having NOT A SINGLE CLUE how to use this machine. I told my coworker that I borrowed this machine from that she doesn’t need to set any of it up for me, that I am going to teach myself how to do that along with teaching myself to sew. So that is exactly what I did. I started by googling what to do and youtube took me the rest of the way.

First I started with getting the “bobbin ready”. took me honestly 5 minutes just to find where the bobbin was on the machine… yikes. Then I moved on how to thread the needle. Honestly, these videos were great! The videos were very step by step, which made it much easier than I thought it was going to be.

I then decided to try a few different types of stitches on a paper towel like the video had. It was lots of fun and now I just want to put a bunch of materials together. But I will continue to go along on track of my plan. I don’t want to do too much just yet. I am going to continue to play around with the machine.. and even try changing the color of the thread.

My goal for next week is to learn how to sew materials together so it looks solid and straight. I plan to practice doing this on different materials OR finding old clothes that need some patching up. (I can only imagine that my fiance has a pile building that he wants sewn LOL).

  1. Wow, that’s truly impressive, Kyla! Taking the initiative to learn something entirely new and mastering it through self-teaching shows incredible determination and resourcefulness. It’s inspiring to see how you dove headfirst into the challenge and used online resources like Google and YouTube to guide you through. Your willingness to learn and adapt is admirable—keep up the fantastic work!

  2. Hey, Kayla!
I love that you included your own video, it adds such a personal touch to your blog and who you are as a learner yourself! This was such a fun post to read, and brought back my own memories of being taught how to sew, the bobbin is definitely a pain when you’re first starting out! I can’t wait to follow along on your journey!

  3. Hi Kyla,
This is awesome and a handy skill to have in life! Practicing on a paper towel is a unique strategy I have never considered, but it could be useful as you would not waste material. I am excited to see your progress and completed work!
