Motivational Quotes

The following are some of my favorite quotes from renown educators who have influenced my journey towards becoming a teacher.

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.”

— George Bernard Shaw

This quote from Bernard who is a well know musical and theatrical critique uses this quote in relation to his artistic endeavors. I do believe however it fits perfectly in with the content of Physical Education!

“You can discover more about a person in an hour of play than in a year of conversation”

— Plato

Plato being a grand philosopher had some seriously keen insight when he said this. I feel this quote speaks to the development of strong relationships which are key in Physical Education!

“A vigorous five-mile walk will do more good for an unhappy but otherwise healthy adult than all the medicine and psychology in the world.”

— Paul D. White

Dr. White being an important preventative cardiologist not only understood the inner workings of the body when it came to health of the heart, this quote shows a keen understanding of the effects of physical activity on mental health.

“The arts, sciences, humanities, physical education, languages and maths all have equal and central contributions to make a student’s education.”

— Sir Ken Robinson

An important educator who is actually new to me, Sir Ken Robinson makes it clear that a holistic approach to education is key. Students need a balance to lead healthy and happy lives!

“I could feel my anger dissipating as the miles went by – you can’t run and stay mad!”

Kathrine Switzer

Being the first woman the enter the Boston marathon, she faced a lot controversy for doing this. She faced the backlash and proved to the world that women were capable of competing in long distance events. This was one more step towards empowering women in the world of sports. When it comes to her quote, I think it shows the powerful effect physical activity can have on a person’s immediate state of mind. Perhaps the best way to deal with students who are struggling emotionally is to let them vent through physical activity!
