In the textbook “Educational Foundations in Canada” by Alan Edmunds, Jodi Nickel and Ken Badley I took the educational philosophy quiz (p 207). My highest scoring philosophy was Social Reconstructionism with Progressivism being only one point behind. I was not surprised to discover that these were both my highest scoring philosophies as they resonate with my beliefs.
Social Reconstructionism: A philosophy of education that maintains that teachers and schools ought to be change agents in creating a new and more equitable social order (p 228).
- This follows with my own personal education philosophy as I believe teachers are responsible for creating social changes and educating students on current issues happening in the world. I feel like this makes more responsible students and allows for people’s beliefs to be challenged when necessary. It also encourages new thinking and understanding.
Progressivism: A child-centered philosophy emphasizing problem solving while capitalizing on students’ curiosity and creative self expression (p 223).
- Progressivism also follows with my beliefs as I think it is important for students to be interested in what they are learning, be curious and ask questions. I think that these are all important parts of education and should be encouraged within the classroom.
