Like Granny, Like Grandson
Hey, readers! It’s been a while since my last post, and for good reason. Last time I posted, I was updating you all on my learning experience with the single crochet. Now, you must be wondering what could possibly better than a single crochet? THE DOUBLE CROCHET. As you’ve probably already guessed, my favourite way to learn about different stitches and crochet techniques is definitely YouTube. So, that’s exactly where I went to figure out how to double crochet.
I instinctively went to a channel called Bella Coco that I’ve used before because their videos and commentary were extremely helpful the first time around. The channel already had a playlist including some beginner crochet methods that I used. One of the videos was focused on the double crochet.
After following along, I was able to successfully form a nice string of double crochets and felt I could do a bit more so I built on top of the first row to practice more of my double crochets.
With my double crochets and my single crochets pretty much nailed down, I decided I wanted to do something a bit more expansive. After scratching my head for a little while trying to decide what I wanted to do, I thought about a comment from Alannah Uliski and from Bernice Hauck in my EDTC 300 class. They both suggested that I try making a blanket, more specifically, Alannah had mentioned I should try making a granny square blanket. Having no idea what a granny square blanket was or why it was so elderly, I searched for some answers on YouTube. It wasn’t long until I found this fantastic video by Amanda Crochets detailing exactly what I needed to know.
Now, I didn’t want to dive straight in with the fancy new acrylic yarn that I bought in case I messed up horribly, so I decided to practice the first few rounds with my cotton yarn. The slideshow below shows my steps as I formed the magic ring, my first few crochets, the completed central square, and the completed first two rounds.
Having the confidence that I knew the steps necessary to make my blanket, I whipped out my fancy yarn and got to crocheting. I didn’t have much of a chance to grab many photos as I found myself doing this project wherever I could – at work, on the bus, and between classes. Regardless, I’m happy with the progress I made and still have much further to go.
That about wraps up this post for this week. Next week I’m hoping to explore different ways of documenting my progress like some sort of timelapse or video format and trying new learning platforms like TikTok. See you then!

The progress since the last post has been amazing! I’m sure making a blanket is a huge undertaking, but when you’re finished I’m sure you’ll have a huge sense of accomplishment. It’s something you can be proud of and a tangible reminder of what you can achieve when you set your mind to something! (P.S. I also had no idea what a Granny square blanket was, but looking at it it kinda makes sense lol)

Hey Jerico,
I love the video you posted! I think I watched the same one! Great minds think alike!!! I can’t believe how far you have come! Ahh I love watching our journeys on the same learning project!

Yay! Good job! Your progress is amazing.
What kind of yarn have you been using? or what brand?

For this particular blanket, I was using Lion Brand Mandela Yarn. Its an acrylic yarn that I prefer much more to cotton simply cause it doesn’t split as much as when I was using cotton 🙂

Hey Jerico, your blanket looks amazing from the photos provided. It appears as if you are making amazing progress in a relatively fast pace! Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing what else you can accomplish! On a side note, are you planning on making any gifts for family for the holiday season? That could be a nice, thoughtful gift!

I actually am thinking about making a nice little cat keychain for the special someone in my life! At first, I doubted the significance of a gift like that, but your assurance is convincing me!

Hiya,
I’m glad that you’ve found a learning resource that suits your learning style. It’s also handy that it has abundant information.
It looks like your string tension issue has been improved dramatically! The even tension on the crochet medium seems to really help the final look of your project.
Your granny square looks really good, and your blanket is coming along nicely.
Look how far you’ve from your goal at the beginning of the semester! Would you maybe want to revise it?
Cheers,
Austin.
