Being born in the early 2000’s I feel lucky because I have gotten to experience major growth in the technology field. When I was young, I did not have access to a lot of technology. I had a TV, a land line telephone, and a Nintendo Wii. With that being said, my time on these devices was limited and not something that I consider to be a major portion of my childhood. At the time children did not have tablets or cell phones of their own. As time has gone on, I have gotten to see a rise in the everyday access to technology and the amazing strides that technology has taken from flip phones to a computer in your pocket at all times. All of this is to say that my technological knowledge has developed with the advances in technology, however it is surface level.
The technology that I use on a daily basis include my cell phone, laptop, iPad, and television. I typically use my laptop and iPad for academic work. My cell phone is often used for texting, Snapchat, and Instagram. I typically use my television for streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, YouTube and Paramount+. At the end of the day, I would say that the majority of my technology usage is for social and leisure purposes.
I love using my technology to help keep my schedule in order because life becomes very busy with school, work, and my personal life. I know there are many calendar or day planner programs out there but I find that if I am not forced to look at it on a regular basis, I will forget things. I also find that if they are complicated to use or take a long time to create, I tend to find them pointless when I am looking for something to help me save time. That is why I use the calendar app on my iPhone. A feature that iPhone recently added was the ability to create widgets which basically means that you can see inside the app from your home screen. I created a widget that goes across the top of my screen so that I can see all the major events that I have coming up. Another app that I use to help me stay organized is helpful when taking notes however, it is something that I would recommend for tablets as a phone screen can be a little small. I downloaded this app on my iPad and have fallen in love with it. It is called Goodnotes and it is an app that allows you to take notes using a stylus or keyboard. One amazing feature is that you can create folders so that all of your content for one subject will be in the same place. You can also download articles and PDFs into the app so that you can save, highlight, and annotate them. I have found that I love having all the content for one subject in one common space. I used to lug around multiple notebooks which meant that any online content was left out and everything was separated making it easy to misplace.
Like many people I can be easily distracted by my phone. One thing that Apple has done is reimagine the classic Do Not Disturb function. They call it Focus and it allows people to design different versions of the Do Not Disturb function based on their needs at different times. For example, I have created one for work because at my job we use an app called Slack to communicate with one another, however I found that notifications from this app would get lost between notifications from other apps. I decided that when I have my work focus on the only notifications I want to receive are from Slack or if I have received a text message or phone call. This way I do not feel that I need to be monitoring my phone so that I do not miss important information. While I know that I still have a lot to learn about the features of the technology that I have available to me I do feel that I have learned some great techniques to help myself be more productive.
