My Teaching Philosophy

January 2021

I believe in encouraging students to complete everything to the best of their ability. This enables students to find their strengths. This also allows me, as a teacher, to see the diversity amongst students. This is significant because diversity can range from various learning abilities to various cultural backgrounds. Diversity is becoming increasingly prominent in our education system and I believe we should keep that in our minds when exploring several teaching strategies and techniques. I believe all people learn differently and it is important to understand that.

Inclusive education and awareness of diversity coincide with my teaching philosophy. The inclusion of all students, regardless of their abilities and barriers, is immensely significant. I believe in providing and maintaining a reliable and comfortable learning environment. In my classroom, I will accommodate and adapt for ESL students in terms of assignments and classroom work. I will encourage them to complete their work in whichever language they feel most comfortable in and visually show me their work to allow me to understand. I think it is important for ESL students to be strong in their bi/multilingual identity and language. As society and our school systems continue to evolve, I will integrate and promote the idea of diversity into everything that I can. A classroom should be a safe space where students feel comfortable to voice their opinions and thoughts. I will ensure all my students feel involved and are comfortable with expressing their learning through their own culture and language.

I continuously ask myself how I can apply what I learn in school to my teaching in the future. I will continue to ask myself this question when I am a teacher. I will continue to learn when I am a teacher, specifically from my students. I will understand my students by knowing what goes on in their lives outside of school. Rather than making assumptions and getting frustrated, I will take the time to make sure I know each of my students in a comfortable way.

I believe in incorporating environmental education into all subjects. It is significant for individuals, especially at a younger age, to be aware of the growing issues within our natural environment in order to care for and preserve it. Environmental education can be integrated into each subject in school, as well as everyday activities. I will talk about environmental ethics and literacy, as well as Indigenous ways of knowing. This will allow students to form their ecological identities and understandings. This will further motivate them to take action rather than just being knowledgeable and aware. I will implement activities and hands-on learning which will hopefully lead to students taking action at a young age and continue throughout their lives.

I believe that children are observant. Children constantly talk about what their parents did last week or what their sibling said that morning. Even if we do not think they are, children are always paying attention. As a teacher, it is immensely important to always keep this in mind. My students will be listening to me and I will always provide them with encouraging words and feedback. My teaching philosophy is largely based on inclusive education and the increasing diversity present in schools.

December 2021

There are several significant components that form my teaching philosophy. First of all, the incorporation of multiple ways of knowing into most, if not all classroom activities is immensely important to me. Seeing how Indigenous culture is so prominent in society, I will incorporate aspects of Indigenous culture and language into my classrooms. A simple way of doing this is to teach my students basic Cree words like “hello” and “goodbye”. Speaking to the fact that I intend to teach younger students, I think these basic words will be beneficial to learn and easy for them to use in their daily lives. By teaching students the word “Tansi”, they will learn how to say hello which is a general greeting and may develop an interest in learning more about Indigenous languages and culture.

An essential part of my practice will be to continue to build on relationships throughout the year. I believe it is important to focus on furthering and strengthening these relationships we take the time and effort to build. Once we build these relationships with our students, it allows us to see what works best for them in the classroom. This will help me to ensure that all my students succeed, even if they learn in different ways. Learning is constantly happening. This is so crucial to keep in mind because we can adapt for students and change up learning styles and it can still be beneficial to them.

Inclusion is key in a classroom. I believe in encouraging students to attempt things to the best of their ability because it allows me, as a teacher, to see the diversity amongst my students. This is important because this diversity can range from different learning abilities to different cultural backgrounds. Diversity is becoming more and more prominent in our education system and I think that we should keep that in our minds when exploring different teaching strategies and techniques. My classroom will be an inviting environment for all types of learners that come from different backgrounds. I will address means of diversity, even if there is not much visible diversity in my classroom. It is important for students to realize that everyone learns and does things in different ways and that is a positive thing. It is what will make our class as a whole so unique.
