Critical Teaching Manifesto

Just as water is a basic need for every person, so is a proper education. Just as some people don’t have access to clean water, many students also don’t have access to education. As an educator, it is my responsibility to be the outlet that enables every student an opportunity for a proper education. An education that helps our learners to develop the skills to be critical thinkers and question the normative through our society. “Teachers are responsible not only for the education of our students but also for their well-being and social inclusion within our school communities”(Christina Luzius-Vanin & Alana Butler). I will be approachable, open, and adaptable to allow my students to find success in a way best suited for themselves. I will provide a space that is safe for any and all who seek or require it. As a white cis male, I will educate myself of other’s cultures, gender, and sexuality in support of my peers and students that identify as part of these communities. As a settler on these lands, I acknowledge the wrongdoing of the past and the injustice still at hand. It is my responsibility to teach the truth and be an advocate of Indigenous ways of knowing. I will create equal opportunity for my students, even if some battles may be harder fought. I will be innovative in looking for ways to assist those struggling, while also challenging those thriving. I acknowledge that each student is unique and that one style will not work for every student. I also must take care of my own well being to ensure I can provide the best environment for my students and lead by example.
