Artificial Intelligence and it’s ethical role in the classroom

AI is a tool that no matter one’s opinion on it, will be integrated into the classroom. Previously I have researched AI tools and their benefit in some ways is undeniable. Spell check, research, grading, formatting, creating lesson plans, it all could be used to supplement these things. But just as standardized tests are controversial, I think grading using AI should be just as controversial. I understand the argument of it eliminating biases and teacher favoritism, but I also see every day how a lack of compassion and taking into consideration the difficulties each student faces affects equitable grading tactics. This especially so would play a detrimental role in the grading of students who are on alternate or modified learning plans. Ethically I would disagree with this approach because I believe as a teacher, one must continually break down barriers between a student and success, and human critical thinking and empathy in grading is a part of doing so.

I believe that AI will create more difficulties in teaching children about digital literacy, as well as topics such as; fake news, deep fakes, and scammers. A YouTube video I watched about OpenAi’s new program “Sora” was very eye-opening as to the role new, more advanced AI will play in these topics. Sora can create incredibly lifelike videos, that are almost completely impossible to decipher from real life. The quality is striking and it is very lifelike, and watching them I wonder how long it will be before AI completely takes over the media, and how long it will be before a completely AI-generated movie is a blockbuster. The implications AI plays in digital literacy, our judicial system as well as potentially how we connect with other humans is scary to me, but again, weather we like it or not, it is now here and we will see how the world changes as time passes. AI will forever be a part of the classrooms going forward, its just a matter of how much of a role the AI will play.

  1. Hi Cheyenne!
I must say that I agree with you that AI is a tool that no matter one’s opinion on it, will be integrated into the classroom. Artificial intelligence is now everywhere, and the landscape is changing rapidly and regularly. It is rather unfortunate that a tool with so many educational benefits also has lots of downsides.
