Wrapped in Progress: Blanket Update and Two Skills Stitched into Success!

March 26, 2024 1 By Kylee Hulm

Welcome back, my fellow crochet enthusiasts. After a short break last week from my crochet blanket content, I thought I would provide an update on my blanket progress and share two new skills I learned while working on my blanket. I cannot believe how much my crochet skills have improved during the progression I’ve made on my blanket. I have gone through 3 balls of yarn now, learned how to start a new ball of yarn in the middle of a project, and learned how to switch the colour of yarn at the start of a new row. I included an updated picture of my progress and what I made below with the 3 balls of yarn.

If you’ve been following my blog this semester, you will have noticed a trend that many of the videos I link come from TikTok, and that is because this is my app of preference for finding crochet tutorials and tips. This is because the videos are shorter, there are multiple creators, and most videos generally go straight to the point and show what I am looking for. That being said I do use other sources such as YouTube and more recently I’ve been using Pinterest and have been finding tons of helpful videos and patterns. Why am I discussing this? Well, to put it simply, I’m just reflecting a bit on why I have been sourcing my videos from TikTok since this week. I have learned two new skills from TikTok. Skill one is switching to a new ball of yarn in the middle of a row. This video was the first one I watched, and I instantly liked how they showed me how to switch balls of yarn. The speed was great, and the view of the yarn and stitches was easy to follow. I have used this skill twice now. The first time was when my yarn had a big knot, and I had to cut it to continue my project. The second time was when I finished the first ball of my sweet snuggles yarn I’m using for this project.

The second skill I learned, which was displayed in the blanket tutorial I’m following, is switching to a new yarn colour. For this skill, I referenced the blanket tutorial I’m following as the creator shows how to switch colours at 6 minutes and 25 seconds, but I wanted to search and see if I could find another yarn colour change tutorial as well. After searching, I stumbled upon this tutorial. After comparing the two videos, I found both were quite similar and very helpful. However, I did prefer this tutorial because there was no filter, the lighting was better, and the thinner yarn made it a bit easier to follow. I was so happy to have been able to conquer both of these skills with ease. Thank you for reading my blog. Until our next loop, keep spreading joy, one stitch at a time!
