When thinking about a focus for my learning project, many ideas came to mind. Yoga? Sewing? Cooking? With all of these ideas, I knew that I wanted to do something meaningful and something that would benefit me in my everyday life. Learning American Sign Language is something that I have wanted to do for a long time, and I thought this project would be the perfect opportunity. This skill would benefit me in so many areas of life, including teaching in an inclusive environment. I have no experience learning ASL, so I am going to be starting with the basics!
I am so excited to begin developing my skills and documenting my progress. I hope to learn a new skill each week, such as: the alphabet, numbers, common phrases, etc. I plan to use different online platforms to assist in my learning.
Here are a few resources that I have found so far:
- Youtube: There are many channels that offer ASL lessons on a variety of topics
- Gallaudet University Website -Learn Basic ASL: This university’s website has many interactive videos and lessons to teach basic ASL.
- Sign Language 101: This website has lots of quick videos and lessons that appear easy to follow.

I also thought about doing ASL for my learning project, it really is meaningful and useful to know! I can’t wait to follow along with your ASL journey. I know that tiktok has a lot of ASL content if you are looking for more resources. A phrase I think you should learn is: sign slowly, please. I’m sure you might feel this phrase on a deeper level while learning from others!

I too was weighing many options including ASL when I was deciding what to do for my learning project, but I ultimatley choose painting. It seems that you have some great resources to help get you stareted. I always thought that ASL would be something interesting and valuable to know.
