Professional Development Plan (short-term)
Date: November 15 2023 Class/context: 3/4
Intern:  Stella Mulatz Observer: Tracy Hannant
Professional Focus / Intention / Goal:

Confidence

Steps to achieve goal / I will practice:

  • Prepare ahead of time so I know what I need to do and understand how to do it.
  • Remind myself that I know what I am doing and am good at it
  • Embrace the silly side sometimes
  • Practice being myself to my students, show them who I am so they can do the same,
  • Remember that they are looking up to me and that I don’t actually need to know everything, its okay if I have to look something up or answer them at a later point.
Specific instructions for observer:

Watch how I answer questions. If I use a lot of filler words. If I waste time trying to fill it up. Note where and when I stray from my lesson plan and what happens when I do

Data Collection / Observations:

  • Had a well-prepared lesson plan
  • During brainstorming, strayed from the lesson plan to ask students if there was an emotion they were unsure of (this was a good stray)
Comments / Feedback related to professional focus:

  • Said I looked very confident. Used minimal filler words. When I strayed from the lesson plan it was for the best. My adaptations were successful and well-timed, they didn’t cause pauses in the lesson or shift the focus. They just added to the lesson to benefit it.
Self-reflection related to the professional experience, feedback provided, and/or post-conference conversation:

I felt like I did a good job adapting the lesson, and when I made those changes it helped the flow of the lesson and improved understanding for the students. I think I had a moment of hesitation in answering questions because I was unsure of how to explain anxiety and depression to third graders. I realized I didn’t have to go too deep and I just had to put it in simple relateable words for them to understand.  Some of them offered up answers or stories about anxiety and depression however I had to move on to prevent the conversation from drifting form the lesson.

Next steps / for future practice:

In the future, I will prepare anticipated questions that are likely to occur with the given grade I am working with. I will continue to plan my lesson well in advance and practice it so I feel comfortable with what I am about to teach.
