Coding- What comes before Pre-beginner?
Sooooo, I have never claimed to have a solid grasp on technology. But, the 10min. I spent on Scratch literally made my head spin! I had NO idea what I was doing. And if there is one thing that makes me extra embarrassing with technology, it is my inability to troubleshoot. So, when I couldn’t connect the moves I was making, I gave up and moved onto Hour of Code, which was a little more within my ability to manage. I chose a Beginner level game called Monster Coding. I was successful because of the tutorial that basically told me EXACTLY what to do.
Things were smooth sailing until I had to program this one. I had to try it several times before I realized that the function had to go inside the actual box. I can see how the skill of perseverance is developed here because I was ready to give up, until it clicked and then I felt re-energized to keep going…I got this!
I was cruising for a few until I had to add to my array…
The very last one stumped me and I eventually gave up….my mental capacity by this point was pretty much maxed out. Despite being so close to finishing, I can say that I learned some things and if someone were new to coding, this is where I would tell them to start. The play by plays were very helpful. I am only slightly embarrassed that the beginner version of coding….the one my 6 year old daughter would probably be able to navigate…stumped me… but hey, can’t say I didn’t give it an honest effort!

I used to love coding. I haven’t done it in several years, and it can be very frustrating. By now I am sure my son could also outcode me.. LOL
Haha I love the honesty Kaelyn! I also found scratch to be really difficult in high school, I think it’s definitely a better site for creative people or people with experience with coding and the thinking involved. I really enjoyed Hour of Code because of the step by step aspect and I think it fits really well in a classroom setting, so I’m glad you enjoyed that one a bit more. Do you think this is something you’d want to do with your future students?
If I developed a better comfort level, I would do it with students. I think tackling with Grade 1 would make me want to quit my job LOL!! But, I also might just let the experts take on the coding for me haha. I see a place for it with students, I just have a lot of my own learning to do before I sell it to them.
