The Internet can be Great

When I was in school and computers were introduced, the rule of thumb was to fear everything on the internet. There are predators everywhere trying to lure you somewhere (this location was never disclosed). This was problematic for me because I have always questioned everything, my logic dictated that in the small town I lived in the odds of a predator being online at the same time as me and then somehow convincing me to meet somewhere were zero. I knew every kid my age in like a three-town radius. I think theWorried man looking through window blinds into darkness. Paranoia concept most helpful approach through any lens of safety for students is to approach them like they are human beings and have OPEN and HONEST discussions with them. EVERYONE has a right to be seen and heard in a cheerful dog listens to music with trendy sunglasses on a yellow backgroundmeaningful way, especially the major stakeholders in a given scenario. I think the 9 elements could be assigned to 9 groups of students and have each design a poster explaining short succinct points about what their element is about and why it is important. I think by bringing my students into the discussion in a thoughtful way will get the “buy-in” that we need to be successful in this initiative.

    Hi Cody!
I agree with you on this as I had similar experiences. While in school, the use internet was perceived as a huge distraction as well as a trap. It’s sad how I grew up trying to puzzle through the pros and cons of internet use with no guidance.

To add on to this: as someone also from a small town and of a similar age, there were times when the internet was not only not scary, but also borderline life-saving. The internet was how I kept in touch with my friends because I didn’t have that many friends nearby in real life. It allowed me to keep in touch with school when I spent several months in the hospital.

Thank you for such an open and vulnerable reply. I too have spent time in the hospital, and have not shared that with many. It’s great that the internet was such a lifeline for you, I think it is easy to villainize the internet, however, we forget that for many it is their only way of communicating with the world.
