Welcome to the Bake Show!

Hey everyone!

Over the past week I was finishing my beginning research and decided to take my knowledge to the kitchen. Going in I was still a little undecided on what to make first but I ended up settling on banana chocolate chip muffins. This decisions was something where I wanted to settle on something easy and tasty!

When deciding what tool to use, I decided to use TikTok. Although I do frequently use this app for entertainment purposes, I have never tried posting a video. I was not sure what was all available but there was tons of resources to edit these videos.

Above are 2 screenshots of the the video screen and the available resources that one can access to edit their content. Between music, text features and overlapping, I would recommend using this, assuming you don’t want to go public.

When thinking about how TikTok could be used in the classroom, the main thing that came to my mind was being able to use the “only visible to people you follow” feature. Essentially, if a class was to follow each of each other, they could use this platform to publish video projects and it would not be able to go “viral” but rather be restricted to just their classmates and teacher(s). Again, the editing features would allow students to be creative and enjoy it!

Lastly, when considering the SAMR model, I would consider the following scenarios:

  • Substitution – Showing videos as educational supports instead of lecturing.
  • Augmentation – Using voiceovers and text resources to play a project instead of public speaking during the video.
  • Modification – Access and create videos instead of typical posters or powerpoints.
  • Redefinition – Use TikTok as a main source to publish projects and as a teaching instrument for students.

Below is my baking process!

Overall, the muffins turned out a success and I would give them a 8.5 out of 10! I’m looking forward to my next task and if any of you have any suggestions on what I should try to make, I’d love to hear them!

    Hi Evan,
I like how you’ve explained how TikTok could be safely used in the classroom–this was something that had previously worried me. Did you find it to be an easy platform to create a video? The muffins looked great!

    • Evan Goodfellow says:

      Hi Sarah,
Thank you for the compliment! As for TikTok, I found it relatively easy to make the video. It definitely took a little time to search for each component such as text and background music, etc. However, they offer almost all aspects needed to make the video creative and engaging! I would recommend using TikTok as a platform as you can also save the videos to your “drafts” rather than posting it.

Hi Evan, The chocolate muffins looked delicious! One suggestion I have for future things to make, is asking people in your family, grandma’s, auntie’s or your mom for dishes or baking that are your favorites that you look forward to. They can become part of your regular rotation or for special times because you have practiced making them yourself. I have ones that I make regularly, it just becomes like a tradition for certain occasions and special after some of those people are gone!

Hey Julie, thank you for the feedback! I love that idea actually. I am sure my parents and extended family would as well! I will definitely take that into consideration for future options and I appreciate that idea!

Hey Evan! I love that you used Tik Tok to document baking your first recipe. I also used Tik Tok this week. It felt weird making a video as I am also typically just used to watching them! If you’re looking for future recipes, I recommend searching on Pinterest. There are TONS of amazing recipes, as well as recommendations similar to what you actually searched for. If you want to stick to the basics, you should try cookies next! Heres a few recipes I found on Pinterest…

Hey Evan, the baking looks really good. I also used TikTok as part of my learning project and I think that it’s great that there is such a wide array of information available. I also really like your breakdown of the SAMR model. I struggled getting all four to work for TikTok but as soon as I read your four I was like “Oh that’s perfect”.
