Critical Teaching Manifesto

As an educator, I believe education is a bridge to discovering new knowledge within students. The purpose of teaching is to help students grow to be influential members of society and understand who they are. I know the importance of indigenous education and how it impacts all students since we are all treaty people. Reconciliation is essential, and we must help teach students so we can reflect and grow into a better society. I also believe that not all students learn in the same ways; teachers must provide each student with various opportunities for hands-on learning. Putting students into situations where they are challenged allows for greater personal growth within the students because children want to be a part of their learning, and teachers need to provide opportunities for them to do so. We must communicate concerns within the classroom and be there for all struggling students. I know every child has a right to be heard, and we as teachers must remain open to students when they express their needs. Maintaining a positive attitude in the classroom and modelling positivity to students is extremely important. Relationships are essential with students and parents to meet students’ best educational needs. Students should be able to make mistakes and not be punished; we need to allow room for students to learn from their mistakes to be resilient learners. I want to teach students more than just the curriculum allowing them to explore and express themselves to learn in the best way possible. Most importantly, I believe that teachers need to let students know that they are there for them no matter what.
