Week 7

Week 7

I had another great week, and I am quite sad that my placement has come to an end. The students began to learn about the three states of matter: solids, liquids, and gasses. Then they learned about labelling on different household items, for instance, the flammable label, or explosive label. We then went around the school trying to find some items that were labelled as such. They also spoke about the importance of storing these items in a safe space….

Week 6

I had another great week. This week the students talked about the letter r and how it makes different sounds when paired with different letters. They continued to speak about vowels, and how when two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking. In guided reading this week they played a game that I hadn’t seen before. Each student was given the five letters r,m,t,s,a and had to form small words out of the letters and then eventually figure…

Week 5

This week I got to see diversity in a different way by seeing how other teachers teach their students. While my class was at the library, I went and sat in on grade 4 guided math. This was a new concept to me as it didn’t exist when I went to elementary school. I really loved this idea because it allowed the teacher to split the class in half and work on the new materials in a smaller group. This…

Week 4

I believe there is quite a bit of diversity in the classroom I am in. The biggest and most obvious form of diversity is the different personalities of all the kids in the classroom. There are kids who are quiet and keep to themselves, others who are quite outgoing, always asking and answering questions. There is also a mix of different places where these kids are from, some live in the city, small communties in the area, or others that…

Week 3

In the classroom since it is a grade one and two split class, the teacher has to use different ways of teaching to educate all of the students. In the last few weeks, I have been in the classroom I have got to observe the guided reading program and see all the different reading and writing levels of the students in the classroom. With the different reading and writing levels of the students, the teacher has to use different techniques…

Week 2

Week 2

In the past two weeks, I have seen how the community and school intertwine and work together. During my time at the school so far there have been two annual events held by the school for the community. The first was the Scholastic Book Fair and Open House where students would bring their families to meet their teachers and see their learning environments, and also to look at and possibly purchase some books. The second event was held on Monday,…

Week 1

Week 1

My first experience in the classroom was great! A cool and important detail about my field experience, in particular, is my placement is in my home community in the school that I attended from kindergarten to grade nine. I am also with a grade 1 and 2 split class. My cooperating teacher is really amazing and used many different teaching tools throughout the morning to keep the students always engaged and actively learning. The first thing I did was introduce…
