Starting With the Basics

Square

Since I haven’t had any experience with learning American Sign Language, I thought it would be a good idea to establish a good foundation and start from the beginning. With that being said, I thought that exploring the alphabet would be a good place to start. I watched a few Youtube videos, and here are some that I found helpful:

This video was quite helpful as it goes over each letter multiple times at a slow pace. With other videos, I found that it was difficult to keep up with the speed of the video, and I was having to pause and go back multiple times.

I used this video to practice all of the letters with the “alphabet song”. That was a great way to test my speed and make sure I knew each letter!

This week, I decided to document my learning from this week by spelling my name:

My Plan for Next Week:

Next week, I would like to continue to focus on the basics. I am going to look for simple words that will help me with future phrases. Wish me luck!

  1. Hey Presley!
I think ASL is such a great tool to have especially going into teaching. You never know when you will be able to use it to connect to co workers or students. I am interested to see what basic words you cover next week. I will definitely come back and check out your blog again!

  2. Hi Presely!

I love that you chose to learn ASL for your learning project. I had started to learn ASL a couple of years ago but unfortunately did not stick with it. I would love to hear some tips that you find that help you learn over the next few weeks.
I think as a teacher, knowing ASL is becoming a useful skill as we have such a diverse group of students that enter our classroom.
Best of luck in your journey – I look forward to seeing how it goes!

  3. Hey Presely,
Starting with the basics is always a great idea. I mean, you can’t build a house without a foundation right? I think your decision on learning ASL has been a great one as it can be such a useful skill, especially in the world of educating and simply communicating with other in general.
