Organize and strategize

This week, I decided to compile a list of the essential items I will need for this project and to do some shopping. A little help from Team Flower Education, and a trip to Dollarama, and I am set!

Some of the essential tools required are:

  • Lightweight gloves
  • Clean snips or clippers
  • Bouquet ties
  • Bouquet wrap
  • Scissors
  • Containers

I decided that I would start with some artificial flowers so that no beautiful things shall be ruined on my first real attempt at this. I’ve learned that a “focal flower” should be chosen, and then greenery to fill. My first bouquet will be a simple fall arrangement. If it turns out, maybe my husband will even let me put it on our table as a centerpiece for Thanksgiving dinner! LOL!

I am a fan of step by step tutorials, so I blew through a few, and settled on this one because the steps were simple, and the materials were easily accessible.

This video made me realize that I have been doing it all backwards. I usually add the focal flower first and then fill in with the smaller flowers or greenery. I am thinking that this is one of my first big “you are doing it way wrong” moments. Usually, I am gripping the focal flowers in my hand, breaking off twigs and shoving things in all sorts of spots just to make it all look symmetrical and balanced. Come to find later that some pieces never even made it into the water and will surely die before the arrangement is enjoyed. I am also thinking I am going to come to learn that I have tried to work with TOO many flowers at once. I can just sense that some well experienced florist tutorial is going to tell me “you only need a few…even a few will make for a full gorgeous looking bouquet”….stay tuned for that moment of realization..

  1. Hey Kaelyn, interesting project for sure, maybe you could turn it into a side hustle at some point… I liked how you input the video right in your post, it definitely makes it accessible. I also appreciated how you made a list of things you’re going to buy – I went with the same approach and wanted to ensure I knew exactly what I was going to purchase – a good way to not get distracted and accidentally make other purchases.. Good luck with your ongoing project!

  2. Hi, Kaelyn! This looks like such a fun project. After this semester, I may be coming back to your blog posts for tips and tricks to teach myself! I like how you have included a step that you were originally doing different that didn’t work quite as well and have now changed to a better method. It makes us all remember that beginners make mistakes and that’s okay! We all get better with time and practice. Good luck!
