Learning the Alphabet Again!
This week I conquered the alphabet! I used The ASL App to learn the alphabet, and I liked how they have the app set up. First, they show you a close up of how your hand position should be for all the letters. Once you have mastered that, you can see how the signs should be positioned if you were talking to someone. For this, they show a lady doing the signs like she is signing to you. This view was beneficial because some of the signs looked different in this view than the close-up view. Finally, they have a view of a hand and shoulders so you can understand both the close up view and see how the signs should be orientated.
I spent my mornings on the app. I commute with my mom to campus and get to the university around 8:00 am, and my first class starts at 9:30. I used this time this week to learn the alphabet. After doing it a few times, I could sign the alphabet without watching along with the video. Choosing to learn sign language was a good choice because I can practise it anywhere! I always have the tools with me! All week I would spell out things I can see to help remember the alphabet. This practice really helped my understanding of the alphabet and made it so I could remember letters without having to do them in order. I still have trouble remembering how to sign the letters, F, P, and Q. I think that I have problems with these letters because they were not too common in words I would practise spelling out. I also learned that when signing the letter O, I don’t need to turn my hand!
Below is a video of me signing the alphabet with the letters edited in! Use it to learn how to sign your name! Wish me luck for next week, when I take on counting!
Wow, Brooke! Awesome job. You are making me regret not choosing ASL for my learning project. I am impressed with how you learned the alphabet so quickly – I would definitely need longer to get them all down 100%. Regarding technology, the description of your resource sounds awesome, and I LOVED the video you provided. It’s a great way to keep track of your progress.
Can’t wait to see what you accomplish for the upcoming weeks!
Learning ASL is a great choice for a project as it will have many benefits in your life in the future. Growing up, I had a friend who used ASL as his primary form of communication. I love that you are doing this, amazing work!
ASL was definitely a great choice for your learning project, and will continue to serve you as you enter your teaching career! It’s so helpful that you are able to practice anywhere and it likely makes more interesting that you can challenge yourself while you’re on the go.
Great job with the alphabet! It’s crazy how much you learned in just one week, I look forward to following along on your journey.
