“Knitting” the Ground Running

“Knitting” the Ground Running

Knitting is a skill that I have always wanted to learn. I’ve just never had the drive, confidence or frankly the time to begin. However, I figured this would be as good of a time as any to start. I grew up watching my grandmother knit, and now that she has passed our family cherishes the intricately handwoven blankets that she created for us all.

To be completely honest, I had no idea where I was going to start so I turned to the app on my phone where I spend the most time mindlessly scrolling. TikTok had plenty of videos for beginning knitters and opened my eyes to things I had not considered. Different gauges of yarn, different yarn materials, styles of knitting needles, stitch markers, measuring tapes, etc. I appreciated this specific video highlighting the basics to get started.

Next week’s shopping list now includes knitting needles and yarn. However, all this new information has got my head feeling like a ball of yarn after the cat has played with it.

My plan as of now is:

  1. Buy supplies.
  2. Learn to “cast on”.
  3. Figure out the basics of creating a stitch.
  4. How do I make a second row?
  5. Consult the internet for how to knit a toque.
  6. Try not to fail.

I hope to start building my skill repertoire in a few days once I have gathered all of my supplies from the store. I’m looking forward to sharing my knitting journey and determining whether I have the patience to learn this skill.

  1. Hi Lauren, knitting confused me soooo much, maybe you’ll find some resources that will make it simpler for me to understand. Knitting is so rewarding though, to see, keep, and use something you worked hard on is so nice. Good luck!
