The Problem of Common Sense

The Problem of Common Sense

In the article The problem of Common sense, Kumashiro defines common sense as the way we think something should or has to be, he shares his insight on common sense in regards to teaching, he explains how common sense does not allow us to explore what we could be doing in the classroom to give the students the greatest chance to learn. Common sense is important to be aware of and pay attention to because it could close people off or make them afraid to try something new, go outside of the norm. Things are always changing and although common sense is a good thing to have, it is also good to be self-aware. That is something that I have learnt in my post-secondary education classes that the way I was taught is not the only way to be taught. It is not always easy to take a step back and look at how your perspective might not be the best way, but it is also necessary to grow.

  1. Very interesting connections Shay! I wonder what kind of things you think we as educators could do to make ourselves aware of our common sense? I’m also curious about the contrast between the kind of ways were you taught and the ways you want to teach/have learned about teaching? I’m looking forward to seeing your future posts. 🙂

  2. Good! Ya we should not ignore the others point of view and methods regarding teaching even if we are doing it differently.
