Contributing to the Learning of Others

Contributing to the Learning of Others

This semester I have had the pleasure to learn not only with but also from my fellow classmates. The layout of this class made it very easy to be inspired and engaged by what everyone else in class was doing.

There are three main ways in which I feel like I contributed to the learning of others in this class:

  1. Through my own blog posts
  2. Through commenting on their blogs
  3. Through communicating my thoughts in breakout rooms on Zoom.

In my blog posts, I was always conscientious of the fact that my classmates would be reading them. I tried my best to think of them and the ways I could help them throughout this semester when writing my blogs. Here are a few times where I specifically wrote about things for them,

  1. Here I wrote about some new ways to learn:  through watching TV, and through using products around us.
  2. Some features of Duolingo that you could use in the classroom.
  3. Some questions they could respond to in their next blog posts.

I was very lucky to get to read the blogs of many of my classmates throughout the semester which in turn helped me with my own learning. Here are some of the comments I left on the blogs I found particularly interesting, helpful and motivating.

Finally, I feel that despite not being a very vocal person during the whole group class discussions, I was able to connect and give good insight to my classmates during breakout group sessions. I made an effort to talk and give my opinion during each breakout session. I often responded to what my classmates were saying in critical ways that sparked the conversation to keep going and maybe made them think about something differently than they once had.

I would now like to acknowledge that I never used Discord this semester. I sometimes would see messages pop up but I can’t say I was ever notified when a question popped up (or maybe I just never saw them because of other notifications). To me it looked like people were just having conversations in the chat or by the time I got to it, the question was already answered. I will accept the fault for not participating in this as I realize it was quite helpful for many students. I am glad I was introduced to it so that I could learn how to use it. Someday this may come in handy as a tool I can use.

Overall, I feel that in some ways I contributed a lot in this class but I realize that there are lots of things I could have improved on as well. One of those being that I need to learn to use my voice and speak up in front of the larger group in class. Another being that I should be more involved in classroom communities such as the Discord chats we had going on. I am happy to have had this experience to learn with and from my classmates and this learning community is something I will definitely take forward with me in my future career.
