Scare Tactic or Threat?

Thinking back to cyber safety in school, I believe that the tactics used were not very beneficial to how myself and other students viewed the internet. The main tactic that teachers and parents used were statements that included “you never know…” or “strangers will see”. This was what I believe to be a scare tactic to limit our teenage posting online. Watching the video provided in class, this is a prime example relating to that about how Sarah questions how people know her name. Although scare tactics may work on younger children who are new to having social media/electronics in their life, once children get older, they may look past any advice.

Although it is harder to implement other ways, I believe some children will never learn until it happens to someone close to them. Once it hits home, children usually realize how serious of an issue it may be.

Depending on relationships between parents and students, it may eventually proceed further than typical scare tactics. In some cases, parents may threaten to punish children by taking away devices if they are posting things that are not approved by the parents. A strategy like this is probably even less beneficial as this would add a symbol of anger from the students part.

What do you all believe is the most beneficial way to teach children and teenagers about cyber safety?

Participation vs. Activeness

Hey everyone,

After watching the anthropological introduction by Wesch, I have some interesting views. He claimed that he believes media is used to mediate human relationships. I believe that this is an interesting way to view it but it is also correct. Human relationships change daily and by changing media, this could drastically affect human relationships.

In regards to my future classroom, I think technology will play a key role in participation. Some forms of this may include:

  • Kahoot
  • Google Classroom
  • Online Games

These will be necessary for students to build relationships, complete work and succeed in the class.

However, for schooling, the ever-changing aspect of technology could be harmful in a sense. If teachers try to focus and stay up to date, this could falter their ability to utilize other resources and result in their teaching style being less effective. Teachers who use technology such as videos and documents, are often engaging however, too much can be harmful in the sense that it becomes unorganized. Not only this, but using too much technology can add onto the idea of younger generations becoming addicted to media. According to the article we read, 54% of students believe it would be hard to give up social media. As teachers, we do not want to add to this.

Overall, I think technology is a key and important aspect to aiding in children’s learning. However, as I said, there is a point where enough is enough and each teacher needs to find out where that threshold is for themselves.

Snap!

Hey everyone,

I hope all is going well for everyone and your projects are coming along well! Last week, I decided to take the suggestion from Jerico and make ginger snap cookies. Honestly, at first I thought this was going to be extremely easy but as it went on I started having doubts. Having  minimal experience with baking before this project, I normally watch and eat during the process of making cookies. However, this showed me the importance of sticking with it. I started by searching up any ginger snap recipe, then proceeded to begin. In the photo below, I started by preparing the ingredients.

After doing this, I began getting to work and trying to achieve a nice, chewy ginger snap. (Sorry for some reason I could not get the slideshow to work).

As you can see it was a process but went smoothly. With this being said, this is when my doubt became real. The cookie dough seemed to be dry (in comparison to the cupcake and muffins that I made) but I later realized that was meant to happen. Below is the finished product:

As you can see, the two columns on the left were the first batch (not pressed), but since they seemed pretty round and didn’t flatten as much as expected, I decide to push with a fork for the second batch (three columns on the right). In the end, I wish I left them as they don’t have that ginger snap look but it ended up being a good learning experience through the dough and trial process.

As for taste, they turned out really well (my dad is enjoying them the most, haha) and they will be gone really fast! I might need to make another batch. Have any of you ever made ginger snaps? For some reason I always want to correlate them with Halloween, haha.

Thanks Jerico, for the suggestion and look forward to another week!

Getting Spooky…

Hey everyone,

I hope everyone had a great reading week and continue to research and work on their learning projects. Over the week off, I decided to make cupcakes for my family alongside my partner. Seeing that I made a TikTok last post, I was going to stick to photos for this task.

When deciding what to make, I wasn’t sure as I made muffins last week. A comment from Julie on my previous post recommended I ask my family what they would enjoy and I thought that was a great idea. With that being said, they recommended Halloween themed cupcakes. I was excited as this would be a nice, yet slightly challenging uptick from the muffins.

I began researching chocolate muffins (because who doesn’t love chocolate) and began to get to work. Unfortunately, once I got started I forgot to take multiple pictures of the process… but I did get an end product and some of the halloween decorations brought out on the way haha.

Above is some nice table top decorations with some store bought treats behind. Below is a light up pumpkin that can shine through the window welcoming Trick-Or-Treaters and giving a spooky sense to the neighbourhood.

And now the part you probably all want to see… the actual cupcakes. I decided to go to the store and buy some candy corn and sprinkles to put among the top as the finishing touches. Although before these could be added, I needed to create the icing to stick them onto. I wasn’t for sure on how to do this but after researching, I used the following sites instructions. Here is the end product:

Overall, the product looked great but could definitely use some more precise measurements and careful attention which I will be putting a main focus on next task. I hope you guys are enjoying my learning process and I’ll post again soon.

Lastly, if you have anymore recommendations on what to make, who to address and how to improve, I would love to hear it! Happy early Halloween!

Welcome to the Bake Show!

Hey everyone!

Over the past week I was finishing my beginning research and decided to take my knowledge to the kitchen. Going in I was still a little undecided on what to make first but I ended up settling on banana chocolate chip muffins. This decisions was something where I wanted to settle on something easy and tasty!

When deciding what tool to use, I decided to use TikTok. Although I do frequently use this app for entertainment purposes, I have never tried posting a video. I was not sure what was all available but there was tons of resources to edit these videos.

Above are 2 screenshots of the the video screen and the available resources that one can access to edit their content. Between music, text features and overlapping, I would recommend using this, assuming you don’t want to go public.

When thinking about how TikTok could be used in the classroom, the main thing that came to my mind was being able to use the “only visible to people you follow” feature. Essentially, if a class was to follow each of each other, they could use this platform to publish video projects and it would not be able to go “viral” but rather be restricted to just their classmates and teacher(s). Again, the editing features would allow students to be creative and enjoy it!

Lastly, when considering the SAMR model, I would consider the following scenarios:

  • Substitution – Showing videos as educational supports instead of lecturing.
  • Augmentation – Using voiceovers and text resources to play a project instead of public speaking during the video.
  • Modification – Access and create videos instead of typical posters or powerpoints.
  • Redefinition – Use TikTok as a main source to publish projects and as a teaching instrument for students.

Below is my baking process!

Overall, the muffins turned out a success and I would give them a 8.5 out of 10! I’m looking forward to my next task and if any of you have any suggestions on what I should try to make, I’d love to hear them!

Finishing Touches Before Baking

Throughout the week, I decided to change my research from online to Youtube videos. I wanted to branch out and still learn about the basics while also beginning to dig deep and come across the essentials. One common thing that I came across was that there is a huge difference in cooking vs. baking. As Jerico mentioned on my post last week, I wanted to indulge in this. Baking can be seen as more of a science where you can control the changing rates such as the rise and fall through salts and we can control the temperature.

In the next few days I plan to use my research and minimal prior knowledge to try and make a simple dish. Dishes that I hope to make within this learning process are:

  • Rice Krispie Cake
  • Cupcakes (Vanilla and then proceed to chocolate)
  • Bigger dishes such as a cake
  • If all goes well, pastries.

Overall, I have learned a lot so far and look forward to showing you guys my initial progress for my next post!

Using Time vs. Hardly Using

When thinking about technology, my first instinct is to think of social media and the ways that it influences not only myself but lots of our daily lives. For myself personally, I try to use my time wisely when being on a phone or computer, however, I find that from time to time I am often getting distracted and have a lack of focus. This begins to be an issue when procrastination takes place and certain tasks are being pushed back.

When doing research, I came across the stat that over 210 million people are addicted in some nature to social media. This is an insane number. In the diagram below, these are the average statistics that people aged 16-64 are spending on social media,

Average time spent on social media

Some social media that I tend to use includes Snapchat, Instagram, Facebook and the typical text messages. From first glance, it does appear to be a lot but I typically only use Facebook or text messaging for conversation and research purposes. However, Snapchat and Instagram on the other hand are strictly often used for social media interaction which can consume most if not all of my social media screen time. These can be huge distractions in my day-to-day life. With all of this being said, the one app that specifically takes a lot of my other screen time is Google Docs. This app helps keep me focused and school-focused as almost the entirety of my assignments and syllabus/daily plans are recorded on there.

Overall, I would say that I do use most of my time in a purposeful, academic focused way, however, I can be caught being lazy in given moments. I am sure that lots can relate to that in some way but hope that minimal, if any, of us fall under the 210 million that are addicted!

Who I am

Hey everyone, my name is Evan Goodfellow! I am a BEAD student who is currently in their third semester of the program. I am majoring in mathematics and minoring in general sciences.

Looking at educational technology, I have very limited experience and have not created a blog until now. I believe it should go relatively smooth but I am learning on the fly how to set up and adapt. Using the recordings that Katia has been posted has been extremely beneficial to look back on. Although I have never blogged before, I do believe it is a cool concept. Having the ability to share your thoughts and progress on a website connected with many colleagues gives everyone a chance to showcase their learnings and success which is awesome!

One last thing about myself is that I am a huge NFL fan. If you are ever looking to strike up a conversation about sports or football, I will always be willing to listen. If you have any thoughts on the scores or schedule, I will also always have an opinion to give you haha. In the photo below I am the second from the left.

I look forward to creating relationships with all of you this semester!

Learning to Bake with a Good-fellow: Introduction to my Learning Project

Beginning my learning project, I wanted to pick a task that I could use for future growth and a task that could be useful for my peers. I began talking with my parents and after discussing back and forth, we decided that something useful could be baking. This sounded awesome as tasty baking is always delightful. However, I have been privileged enough to always be handed baking and I have never had to make any. Basically, I am starting my learning project from level one.

Moving forward with this project, I plan to continue my baking project every weekend by creating a new dish or food while progressively getting more difficult each weekend or every second weekend. This will allow me to expand my skill set and hopefully be successful at baking many dishes in the near future. Within the past week, I have not done any baking but rather been researching beginner tips online. One website that I found, provided very common, but important tips when it comes to baking. Keeping all of these ideas in my head will be crucial to being successful.

One way that I plan on evaluating myself is to have both my parents taste test my creations. Obviously, this may go south the first couple of times… (haha). But I am hoping they stick with me and provide feedback in both positive and negative manners.

I hope all of you are as excited as I am as we embark on our learning journeys!
