Internship

I completed my internship at Campbell Collegiate in the fall of 2022. During my time at Campbell, I taught Foundations & Pre-Calculus 10 and enriched Pre-Calculus 20. Since I am a drama minor, I also helped co-teach Musical Theatre 9/10/20/30 and spent a bit of time teaching Drama 9. Internship was an amazing experience for me, as it taught me how to actually teach. I learned a ton about time management, the importance of adjusting instruction based on your students’ needs, and began to discover who I am as an educator. I also realized that relationship building doesn’t come as easily and naturally in a math classroom as it does in drama, but I worked to find ways to really get to know the students in each class I taught.

Extra-Curricular

I was a member of Best Buddies when I was in high school, so I decided to get involved with Campbell’s Best Buddies program. I attended weekly planning meetings as well as a number of great events they put on! I was able to get to know a number of the students in the FIAP program at Campbell through Best Buddies, but also through Musical Theatre and classroom observations. I am quite passionate about inclusive education and really enjoyed my time working with these students.

I spent many hours during my internship volunteering with Campbell’s musical production of The Addam’s Family. This was a huge undertaking, as the production involved over 100 students in total. I worked alongside three other teachers as a co-director of the performance. I made suggestions for improvement throughout the rehearsal process, coached the students on acting and character development, and assisted backstage during all five performances of the musical. It was an unforgettable experience and so rewarding to get to see everyone’s hard work pay off in the end.

Math Art Assignment

During my internship, I tried my best to encourage student creativity through some non-traditional assessments. Some of the assignments I developed for my grade 10 students included a factoring poster, creating their own trigonometry word problems, and math art. It was awecome to see how many of my students thrived with this kind of assessment; I saw their motivation and effort increase dramatically. The assignment that I feel went especially well was the math art assignment. This assignment connects to multiple outcomes for Foundations & Pre-Calculus 10 in the Saskatchewan curriculum, including FP10.7, FP10.8, and FP10.9.
