Who is Michelle Haug?…
As I reflect on that question I believe who I am is twofold; one being the people, places, and experiences in my life, while the other being how I have used each or rather, what I have learned through each of them. Which is why Charles R. Swindoll’s quote: “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react” has significant meaning to me. I found school to be my home away from home combined with the wonderful teachers that taught me through the years all of which have been pivotal in the decision of fulfilling my dream to become an educator.
I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and moved to Tisdale, Saskatchewan when I was five years old where I attended Kindergarten and grade one at Dag Elementary.
I moved to Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan after my grade one year ended where I attended Westmount Elementary School (grade two to six), Empire School (grade seven to eight), and Riverview Collegiate Institute (grade nine to twelve), where I graduated with various honours and awards. School was the one place I felt loved, accepted, and safe growing up, which is what I would like to reciprocate into my future students. My identity as a lifelong learner, my love for education, and my dream of becoming an educator has been developed by Miss. York (kindergarten teacher) but also strengthened by the many teachers throughout my life. They have all taught me more than just reading, writing, and arithmetic!

I have a lot of great memories growing up with my two younger sisters, of camping, playing with my friends and other family members. Altogether the experiences, people, and places have had a huge impact on who I have become and who I continue to become. Moreover, as an adult I have learnt even more about who I am and who I want to become by continually letting go, reflecting, analysing and learning various was of relating to others because everyone is completely different and brings with them, their own experiences and identity—Which should be respected. My husband and children have been detrimental in developing my identity. Each of them as a person brings both challenges and rewards through various experiences, and an incomparable relationship that develops not only their identity but mine as well. I have also come to appreciate the power of perspective; as each of my four children have had the exact same home life and parents; they are completely different in character with completely different perspectives. This has taught me that listening to people is key and that everyone is an individual that can only be compared to as such. As well, because of their uniqueness they all have different learning styles and needs which has led me to be adaptable and adjust how I teach so that they can enjoy the process and develop the skills. I have combined this knowledge with what I learned in my childhood and have applied it throughout the other various roles and relationships in life, which has led me to love others with a greater appreciation of who they are and what I can learn from them.
My Family Fall 2019
In understanding who I am, I feel like the place that has influenced my identity aside from school, is my church, Victory Church of Moose Jaw. Victory Church has been important to me as an adult not only because it is where I was married, dedicated and raised my children, reached out and connected with my community, and where I have grown to love and accept ALL people, but also because it has helped me heal from my past through helping others with theirs, it is where I have developed leadership skills and teaching skills through children’s ministry, singing on the worship team, administrating, leading small groups, and more.
While there is so much more to who I am such as interests, personality, and dreams, I feel like those are only surface layers and what I have shared relates to me more as a person and how I relate to others and what inspires me to be a teacher—I hope to be one of the people in a child’s life that believes in them, shapes them into being a life long learner, and last but not least one that is crazy about them so that they look forward to coming to school each and every day!
