Journey to Reconciliation Project

In ECS 100, I wrote a poem outlining my personal journey towards reconciliation and my beliefs on what action needs to occur in order for reconciliation to be accomplished. The poem, entitled “The Race,” is about two young girls; one is a privileged white girl, while the other is an Indigenous girl attending a residential school. “The Race” speaks about unearned privilege. This type of privilege is handed to certain individuals by society based on arbitrary characteristics such as race. The ending of the poem includes elements of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s 94 Calls to Action by emphasizing the importance of listening to Indigenous people and their stories. The poem encourages readers to recognize the privileges they posses and consider what action they can take to facilitate reconciliation.
