Back to The Basics
This week was all about learning the letters of the alphabet in ASL. It was trickier than I thought! I found switching between the hand movements took a lot of concentration, and often took me a lot of time to transition between the letters. I am definitely going to keep working on the alphabet sequence in hopes to be able to sign it quickly and smoothly like how I would say the English alphabet. Here is a video of myself signing the ASL alphabet…
I used a great website called Sign Language 101 to learn the alphabet. I found their videos to be a great pace for a first time learner. I will definitely visit this sign again for future learning.
Next week is all about learning numbers! Feel free to comment any tips or tricks for signing numbers!

That was great Stephanie! Don’t worry about taking time to remember how the letters are signed, you are starting to learn. If you continue practicing you will do it without even thinking and it will become natural!
I’m learning ASL for my project as well, and I’m also about where you are in the process. I find the letters somewhat difficult to know the finger placement for. I think next week I should also include a video of myself reciting the alphabet. I’m impressed by your organized way of learning! I’m kind of doing a free-for-all right now, doing letters and random words and whatever YouTube/ASL apps tell me to learn. I should also be a bit more organized in how I do it. I’ll definitely visit that website that you linked! Thanks for a great post!

This is a great idea for a learning project! It’s okay to find some parts a bit tricky right now, you’re learning a whole new language! Knowing sign language could come in handy in the classroom if you have a hearing impaired student, I bet seeing that you know how to communicate with them will make them feel very welcome.
Yeah, I am also learning ASL and it can be very hard when some signs are very similar to each other or being in your own head saying “what the heck I should know this” or at least that’s how I have been feeling. Good luck!
Hey Steph, this looks awesome! I liked how we could see that you were struggling to remember a few letters at times but then it all came together. It looks like you’re well on your way into this learning project and I look forward to seeing how your progress over the next few weeks!
This was Evan by the way. Haha sorry!
