Blog Post 1: How does Kumashiro define ‘common-sense?’ Why is it so important to pay attention to the ‘common-sense’?

Kumashiro define ‘common-sense’ as what we follow and more importantly is how he fits it into the classroom and what is seen as normal to many. It is how that culture or person sees as the normal way. For example, in the article he talked about how he tried cooking American cuisine but it was seen as wrong by those around him. It is just seen as what is right as well so what we do in a classroom or what we are supposed to do just comes as ‘common-sense’ and is what we see as ‘common-sense’. So, to clarify that a teacher is given a curriculum to follow so it is seen as ‘common-sense’ to most people to follow that plan and curriculum. It is not something we can go against, if the curriculum says to do something, we do it we do not, not do it.  All of these ideas are also seen as perspectives.

Common sense is important to pay attention to as it is something, we all must follow and if we stray from it, we are looked at as if we do not understand what we are doing and are steered off track. Common sense is what keeps things in order and what we fall to get from point A to B and if we don’t things go off track and do not end up where we are supposed to be when we are supposed to be at one point. Although it seems like common sense to follow what is laid out in front of us sometimes, we get steered in a different direction which can put us in a place that is not where we are meant to be and can cause problems. Overall it is best to follow that ‘common-sense’ so we stay on the right track and are not judged or criticized for doing something different.
