Blog Post Two: Curriculum Theory and Practice

Although schooling has changed in many ways since Tyler’s time many things have also not changed. Such as students have no say in anything to do within the classroom and if they do it is rare. I know in my schooling I can only recall a handful of time we were about to chose what to do and it was usually in gym class and not one of the core subjects. For core subjects and learning and testing they seemed to follow Tyler’s Rationale as every assignment we were given always had a check list of sorts or a type if rubric style guide we needed to follow and of things that needed to be done for it and how we need to do it to succeeded and every assignment and reading we did lead up to us being tested on that knowledge we had obtained by doing said assignments or readings given to us.

Although to Tyler Rationale can be seen to have its benefits by some it also has its limitations. By this I mean is restricts the teachers and the students as it make it harder for the children to get engaged and enjoy the class as they are not being taught something they are interested rather if they were able to chose in ways what to be taught they would become more involved and engaged throughout the lessons. It also restricts the teachers because they can not steer from the laid-out plan to include student’s interests or even their own and does not allow for further conversations on some topics. This form of style also has a limitation on students who struggle to learn like other such as not all students can succeeded by doing testing and memorizing as it is not something they are good at and just because they cannot do it they fall behind and are limited to how much they learn and how well they do. It is almost impossible to change how a student learns rather we should adapt to how they learn and include it within our way of teaching to make sure all students are equal and have a fair chance of learning and succeeding in all subjects’ areas. It also limits students from learning about things they love to learn about as if focuses mainly on the core subjects such as math, English, and science so students who have a passion or love for lets say mechanics are steered away from taking this class as they do not want to seem like one for taking another direction or stepping out of line.

A benefit to the Tyler Rationale is that sense it does focus on the core subjects it does push you to continue taking them so that once you are done school you have the required classes that all or most Universities need you to have. Such as an example of my schooling to get into the Education program like so many students you need your English, Math, and Sciences to get into it. It also helps keep teachers on track so that they do not fall behind on what needs to be taught and are not teaching what does not overly need to be taught also. This helps make sure that they have not failed at following the guidelines of what is given for them to succeeded as teachers but also allow the children to succeed as students. Although is has its strengths and its weaknesses it is what has since shaped our current day way of schooling and has since then come a long way and is in its own way starting to include students like in my schooling there were times that I can recall having a choice but for some schools it was snot that way. As well as in my school we were also encouraged to take some classes rather then the core classes but it was not always that case for certain students.
