    Creating a Community

Throughout this course, I’ve had a ton of opportunities to interact with, talk to, and help out my fellow classmates. This year in particular has made it really hard to connect with the other people in education. This is my final semester of University so it was definitely disappointing to go into classes knowing that I wouldn’t be able to have conversations or discussions with other students one last time. This class really helped to change that though. I was able to create connections and interact with new people, and pass on things that I have learned in the last few semesters to new people despite the distance between everyone!…

Beyond My Wildest Seams- Wrapping up my Learning Project

Wow… this semester has absolutely flown by! It really feels like just yesterday when I got started on this learning project and had quite literally never touched a sewing machine before. I am still far from being proficient, but looking back through my posts, the improvement has absolutely been there. A Quick Recap Post One: The first week of this project was mostly focused on getting set up. I got out my sewing machine, got familiar with some of the controls and got all of the supplies I needed like patterns, fabric, and thread. No resources this week, it was all about getting set up. Post Two: The second week…

    An Hour of Code

When trying out coding for the first time, I chose to head over to Hour of Code and try out one of their short coding activities. I have actually done quite a bit of playing around with Hour of Code throughout my life, in some high school courses and in some university courses. This initiative has been really interesting and I’ve kept it in the back of my mind because of how child friendly and accessible it is. This is absolutely a website I could use in lessons and in the classroom, purely because of how much variety in activities there are. My Hour of Code I decided to get…

    Digital Literacy

When learning about the whole concept of digital literacy, these were the three resources/articles that impacted me the most and helped me to understand both what it means to be digitally literate and how to get there: “You’re not going to believe what I’m about to tell you” Comic. It’s Easier To Call A Fact A Fact When It’s One You Like, Study Finds The Smell Test: Educators can counter fake news with information literacy. Here’s how. Learning How to be Digitally Literate The first resource that I took a look at was the comic “You’re not going to believe what I’m about to tell you”. This comic was really…

    Running out of Seam

Following this post I have one more learning project blog to do, but this go around I’ll be outlining my final creation for this journey that I’ve been on. So far I’ve made a cloth napkin, a pillowcase, two masks, and several pairs of shorts, so this time I decided to attempt to make a tank top. This is the video I followed along to this time around. I’ve found that the videos are the best way for me to understand the steps to take and things to do. I followed this tutorial and used the free pdf pattern that goes along with it (linked in the description of the…

    Sew Much Better

Finally, I have managed to create a pair of shorts that, are and look functional. It took several tries but this final attempt was the best of the bunch! That’s not to say that there are no technical issues, my ability to create a straight stitch is still not quite there, but I managed to make a pair of shorts with no holes and no fit issues. Making Changes After two attempts that were less than successful, I made the decision to call up my Grandma once again for some advice. I really wasn’t able to understand where I was going wrong and I was struggling to figure it out…

    Becoming a Not-so-Great Cyber sleuth

I have to start out by saying, cybersluething is much more difficult than I thought it would be. I partnered up with one Jenny Castonguay and went on a search for anything about her online. I have known Jenny for a few years now, and so I knew that this process would not be easy, she is essentially invisible on the internet and doesn’t have many social media accounts to even find. But I used all of the information that I had about her to my advantage, because if I didn’t, then I would have nothing to talk about for this post. Jenny has a very faint digital identity, her…

    Becoming a Digital Citizen

Digital citizenship and views of digital citizenship have changed so much in a really short amount of time, on a societal level more than at a curricular level. Five years ago when I applied to university I was advised by almost everyone to keep my digital footprint to a minimum. This is something that I am seeing change a lot as it becomes more of a norm to have social media than to not, and so as a future teacher, I am having to shift my mindset towards one that promotes digital citizenship more than it stifles it. Digital Citizenship in the Classroom Looking at Ribble’s elements of digital citizenship,…

    Sew on and Sew Forth

Making shorts! Take Two! Once again, I am back and creating a pair of shorts. In my last post, my shorts turned out very, very, very small. This time, I made some adjustments. The main goal was to end up with shorts that I could at the very least put on. Well in that regard, this attempt was a success. Although I did have more issues that I am yet to figure out how to fix. Attempt Two: Go! I was once again following along to this video: Last week my main issues were with the size of my shorts, but beyond that it seemed like everything else was exactly…
