The greatest step towards truth and reconciliation is held within the truth about Canada’s history and the work of our generation and future generations. To properly reconcile, people must understand what happened in the past and listen to those who have been affected. It is important to keep in mind the consequences of residential schools and intergenerational trauma, which contribute to many of the problems that Indigenous people face today. In my art representation, I illustrated some of what I’ve learned about residential schools, as well as some of the traumas those people have experienced. The colors in this piece represent the residential schools and the trauma that came with, and what I believe is a culture which should be celebrated. Overall, this piece expresses what I know, and my continuous journey to learn and listen more.
