Hip hop can be used as a tool to promote social justice and youth activism in the classroom in multiple ways. I feel like in our society the topic of diversity and hip hop can get lost in our teaching. Sometimes it may be swept under the rug because we want to teach what we think is helpful for our students. However, this is something that should not be kept under the rug. This topic is just as important as any other math, science or history class that teachers teach. Promoting hip hop in the classroom can help students learn about diversity in our world, develop awareness, and help them to engage in real world issues. Teaching your students about real world issues (BLM Movement for example) that are currently happening today, educates them with the knowledge they need to have a better understanding of the world they live in. This educates students with knowledge in history of the Black freedom struggle as well as racism/social differences Black people face. With the involvement of hip hop in the classroom it provides students with the proper knowledge and criteria for them to potentially go out into the world and take part in marches and protests to show their support. Hip hop can have a critical impact on the consciousness of a student and how they view the world. Educating students on diversity and issues of racism can make them have a deeper understanding and connection to the information given to them. This can hopefully change their perspective on how they view life and realize that there are serious issues that have happened and are currently still happening today. Sometimes teachers can be slow to introduce hip hop into their classrooms, but the sooner the better. These issues that occur everyday are not to be kept hidden from our students but to be heard by them. These students are the future of our society and can help improve the way racism is seen and the social differences that Black people face day to day.
