Who wants to learn how to knit with me! Yahoo
For my learning project I have decided to learn how to knit. My end goal is to be able to knit a pair of mittens. However, I decided to start with something simpler like a scarf. First, I went to the store to buy the supplies that I will need for my project. My supplies consist of knitting needles and yarn. When first entering the store, I was overwhelmed with the selection of yarn and different sizes of needles. Once I decided on a colour and a quick google search to help me differentiate between the sizes of needles, I bought my supplies.
After watching “How to CAST ON Knitting for Total Beginners” I quickly learned that I chose the wrong type of yarn. For beginners they suggest starting with a thicker yarn because it’s easier to hold on too. This was my first little hiccup but I knew I could buy thicker yarn for the next time. First, I had to learn why and what “cast on” meant. Casting on means how to start your knitting project, you decide the width of your scarf and multiply it by 3. Throughout the beginning of this project, I learned many new words and the definitions of them. Although it took a couple tries to prefect my cast ons, I finally was happy with the end result. I cannot wait for the next step to finishing my scarf!
Hey Taylor, I think it is awesome you’re learning how to knit! My sister got into knitting over the course of last winter and she has not stopped. In less than a year she las learned how to do scarves, mitts, toques, slippers and even a pair of socks! And she was a total beginner like you. She got discouraged at times (as I’m sure you will too) but she very quickly figured it out. Also as a fun story my grandma knits all year long and she donates her mitts to our local Salvation Army every December. Once you have the knitting bug, I’m sure you won’t be able to set the needles down. Best of luck on your knitting adventures and I’m sure your mitts will turn out great!
Hey Meghan! Thanks for your reply on my learning project! Holy smokes so many knitters in your family! Its good to know your sister also struggled and I’m not the only one. I find myself watching a movie and knitting the ENTIRE time! With everyones positive comments I am so happy with the skill I decided on!
Hey Taylor! I too am a knitter, although I’ve never made anything more complicated than a blanket. Knitting is such a great pastime and hopefully, once you’re finished with your first piece you’ll be just as excited to start the next one. I found that youtube and even TikTok can be great for learning knitting as there are so many terms that reading patterns can be really hard at first. I’m excited to see the final mittens and hopefully learn a few new tips along with you. Good luck!
Hey Ava! Thanks for your reply on my learning project! Ahh that’s so nice to know there is a fellow knitter in my class. I am nervous to try mittens because it was a little difficult to start the scarf. I’ll keep you posted!
Hey Taylor! Wow, it sounds like you have learned a lot just after week 1! Mittens are a great idea, especially because of the brutal winters that we can get here in Saskatchewan. Do you know what color you are going to use to create your mitts? I think that knitting is a great choice. Once you get the hang of it, I feel as though it could be a rather relaxing hobby! I can’t wait to see your end product.
Hey Jasmine! Thanks for your reply on my learning project! It took me a few tries to get it right but I when I did it felt so good! I haven’t decided on what colour I am doing yet, I’m starting with the scarf and then we will see how it goes. The more I’m learning the more I feel like it will be difficult to make mittens. However, I will never know until I try!
