“Technology is anything that wasn’t around when you were born” ~Alan Kay When I first heard this quote at the beginning of my EDTC 300 class the other evening, I honestly thought it was ridiculously illogical. In my mind, technology was technology. I did not see how it made sense to imply that a tablet or smartphone would not be considered technology by the next generation of kids. As the lecture went on though, we began to talk about how technology has changed and emerged over the last 50 or so years, and I came to a realization. I have never once considered or referred to a rotary telephone as…

Week Two: The PERFECT Chocolate Chip Cookie
This week, I took a big risk. After only two weeks of learning how to bake online, I attempted to create my own recipe! I had previously decided that I wanted to make cookies for week two of my learning project; however, plain old chocolate chip cookies just did not feel like enough. I thought about it for a few days, and then I read Raylin Janzen’s post about her decision to challenge herself by beginning to use a much larger canvas for her learning project. I was inspired; this was the little push I needed to step out of my comfort zone and do something risky, despite the fact…

My Unforeseen Love for Twitter
If someone came up to me three months ago and asked if I would ever join Twitter, my response to them would have been “No way.” I thought I already knew what Twitter was all about. In my mind, it was a space for celebrities to post funny comments and gain a larger fanbase or for Donald Trump to share his opinions on various topics and warn people of so called fake news, which I quite frankly am not interested in reading. Despite my feelings toward Twitter and its purposes, I reluctantly made an account for the first time a couple weeks ago because it was a requirement for my…

Week One: an Easy Success
For the first week of my learning project I wanted to bake something very basic that I knew would be easy to get right, so I went with this gluten-free banana bread recipe from Betty Crocker’s website. It literally has the word ‘easy’ right in the title, so I figured I better be able to do it. The recipe was already gluten-free, so I just used some all-purpose gluten-free flour that I had in my cupboard. I took a quick look at the ingredients before I started baking, only to realize I had a big problem. I did not even know what one of the ingredients was! So much for…

The Future of Teaching and Learning
Covid-19 has dramatically altered many aspects of everyday life for individuals across the globe. Nobody seemed to expect the massive impact this pandemic would have on our everyday lives and routines. One of the first drastic changes to occur in Saskatchewan was the cancellation of schools on March 20th. The closure of schools has forced both teachers and students alike to adapt to an entirely new form of learning. There is still uncertainty about whether students will return to the classroom this fall or if schools will continue with virtual learning. Either way, everyone will have to accept the new normal that this pandemic has created. What Classrooms Could Look…

The Start of a Delicious Journey!
Thanks to a little push from my EDTC 300 class, I will be spending the next couple of months learning how to bake! Crepes, cookies, cake you name it, I am about to try it! Now, baking is not a completely foreign skill to me. I have definitely learned a bit from my mom and my grandma while helping them in the kitchen, but I have just never really taken the time to bake anything on my own. I am looking forward to exploring this skill and possibly even picking up a new hobby! I was diagnosed with celiac disease at the age of seven, and I have been eating…

Hello Everyone!
My name is Sarah, and I am just wrapping up my first year of Secondary Education which, to say the least, was a whirlwind of ups and downs. Looking back on it now though, I cannot believe how much I have grown as an individual and how fast it all flew by! University has pushed me to try things I would have never imagined myself doing, such as joining a recreational volleyball team and creating my own twitter profile. I am a cheerful and optimistic person, and my ultimate goal in life is to always create happiness within myself and others. I absolutely love travelling; the picture above was taken…
