One Great Thing

Health Education

The health education lesson plan will be relating to the USC1.3 outcome which is to “analyze, with support, feelings and behaviours that are important for nurturing healthy relationships at school” (Ministry of Education, 2010, p. 16). To do this lesson, the students will each be given any kind of healthy flower that has many petals on it. The teacher will ask the students to look at the flower to notice how healthy-looking, full, and vibrant it is. Then, the teacher will ask the students to remove only one petal and notice if it looks any different. Continuing this, the teacher will repeat the cycle to ask the students to remove one petal at a time from their flower. Once all of the petals are gone, the teacher will ask the students what it looks like now. As students see how the flower looks, the teacher will write responses on the whiteboard. Perhaps some of the answers could be empty, less vibrant, sad-looking, and more. Once all of the answers are written onto the board, the teacher will explain what the flower represents. The flower will be seen as an individual and each time a petal is taken away represents something rude said to them or a rude action towards them. Then, the teacher will explain that once the petals of the flower are removed, this represents how an individual feels once many rude words or actions are directed towards them. Additionally, the teacher could also go into explaining how difficult it is to add flower petals back once they have been removed, meaning that rude words are hard to overcome. This will teach the students to treat others with respect and practice healthy relationships in the classroom. Some learning resources being used include hands-on work with flowers, metaphors, whiteboard brainstorming, and more.
