| Content: For this lesson, the 20 students will be using flower petals to create an art piece. There will be white 8.5 x11 paper provided for the students to be using. Each of the students will get a choice between using paper with a heart, square, circle, flower drawn onto it. Then, they will take red, yellow, or blue flower petals and glue them onto their paper in their shape already drawn onto the paper or create their own image to fill in, while making a pattern with the colours. |

| Prerequisite Learning: – Being able to use a glue stick. – Differentiating between the primary colours which are red, yellow, and blue. – Knowing some common shapes such as square, circle, heart, etc. – Knowing, to an extent, what creates a pattern. For example: It could be glueing down a red then blue petal and then repeating this pattern. |
| Lesson Preparation Equipment/Materials Five tables 20 working glue sticks 15 baskets Red flower petals Blue flower petals Yellow flower petals 20 pencils 80 sheets of white 8.5 x11 paper (20 will have a large heart, 20 will have a large circle, 20 will have a large square, and 20 will have a large flower printed or drawn onto it) 20 pairs of scissors 30 pieces of construction paper varying in colour Advanced Preparation – Sort the three flower petal colours into separate baskets. – Each table will have three baskets filled with flower petals. Each basket will have either only red, blue, or yellow flower petals. – Place four working glue sticks at each table. – Have the paper ready to hand out to each child once they are seated. – Place four pencils at each table for the students to write their names once they receive their paper. Their names could also be written on the paper in advance. However, it is good practice for grade one students to write their names by themselves. – Already draw the shapes onto the paper (or print them with a printer) so that the students can immediately start glueing their petals down. |
| Presentation Set: (10 min) – The lesson will be introduced by the teacher showing the students red, blue, and yellow flower petals at the front of the room while the students sit on the carpet and watch. – Then, a brief overview of some pattern examples using the flower petals will be demonstrated to the students. For example, the teacher will arrange a few different patterns on the whiteboard at the front of the room using the different flower petal colours. – Once the students have seen some examples of patterns, the teacher will then demonstrate the steps to creating this art piece. The teacher will show the different options of paper that they can use, varying by what shape or image is drawn onto it. Then, the teacher will choose her own paper to demonstrate with. Then, at the front of the room, the teacher will take their glue stick and glue the different flower petals onto the paper, filling in the shape or flower drawn onto it. As the flower petals are getting glued on, the teacher will also ensure to show some patterns being made. – Following this demonstration, the students will stand up and walk to their seat at their table to get ready to do the activity. Development: (25 min) – Once the students are sitting at their table, with four students at a table, they will start thinking of which shape that they want to do. – The teacher will repeat the paper options once more and then ask the students to raise their hand if they want the paper with a square on it. If their hand is raised, the teacher will give them one of those pieces of paper. The teacher will repeat this for each type of paper. If some students just want a blank piece of paper to create their own shape to fill in, the teacher will also have this accessible. – Once every student has gotten a piece of paper, they can grab their glue sticks and place their lids in the middle of the table so that none get lost. – The students will either cover their shape in glue and then add petals in a specific order, or they will individually place the glue onto each petal and place it in a specific spot on the paper. – As the students are glueing their petals onto the paper, the teacher will walk around and ensure that each student knows what they are doing right now. The teacher will also offer help if any of the students need it, or give assistance in creating the pattern, if the student would like the assistance. – Once the students are done glueing their petals onto the paper, they will need to do a glue check to ensure all of them stay on. To do this, the students will hold their paper up and gently sway it back and forth to see if any petals fall off. -If any petals do fall off, the students will glue them back on. – Once the students are done glueing and have done the test, they will follow the line of the shape that was already on the paper before glueing any petals on and cut out their shape. – Lastly, the students will choose a piece of coloured construction paper to glue their cut-out shape onto. After this, they will also do one more glue check to ensure that everything stays intact. Closure: (20 min) – The students will clean up their area by placing any paper scraps into the garbage bin and making sure the loose flower petals are back in their baskets. – After all of the students have completely finished cleaning, they will be given the chance to show each other their art creations. – Then, the students will place all of their pieces onto a table to let the glue dry – While the glue is drying, the students will sit onto the carpet at the front of the room again to listen to the teacher talk once more. – While talking, they will brainstorm some of the things that have been learned today such as what the primary colours are, the shapes that were used, some of the patterns made, and anything else that the students might want to share. |
| Adaptations/Modifications: Some modifications may also need to be done within this lesson plan to adapt to the students’ needs. – If some students are allergic to flowers or cannot handle the smell that flowers bring into the classroom, modifications need to be made. Perhaps, instead of using real flower petals, we would use fake flowers within this lesson. |
| Safety Concerns: – Before the students are given the flowers, I need to ensure that all of the flowers have no thorns or other sharp edges to prevent any cuts from occurring. – If fake flowers are used, I will make sure that the plastic or fabric on these flowers will not harm the students. Therefore, I will ensure that there are no sharp edges on the petals. – If real flower petals are used, I will need to do research ahead of time on the flowers being used. During the research, I will ensure that the petals being used will not be toxic if humans are in contact with them. Additionally, I will ensure that the petals used are not toxic for pets so that the students will be able to bring their creations home. – Before doing this lesson, I will also make it clear to my students that they do not put the petals in their mouths. While these students are in grade one and should know to not do this, it might be a good reminder to avoid any unwanted scenarios. |
