Show & Tell

Show & Tell

Self-Story #2

On a warm, sunny, fall September day I was walking with my older sister Emily. I had my pink My Little Pony backpack on that was filled with lunch kit, my folders, and My Little Pony stuffy’s that I brought for show and tell. When finally making it to school, I raced to the playground, dropping my bag on the damp grass. Climbing all over the big blue playground set and seeing so many new faces, as it was my second day of kindergarten.

“ring, ring, ring” the loud bell sound went across the whole school field. I slid down the slide and rushed to grab my backpack and ran to the doors of the school. The boot room was filled with kids taking off their shoes, it felt like I was in a pack of sardines. Pushing and shoving, getting moved all over the boot room. After taking off my pink and purple tie-dye dawgs shoes, I make my way into my classroom and put my backpack in my cubbyhole. I was sharing my cubbyhole with two of my classmates, a girl named Cassidy and a girl named Hailee. I looked at both of them with a big smile on my face greeting both of them. I noticed Hailee did not look like me, she had curly long hair like an afro and skin darker than me, Cassidy looked just like me but taller and with long hair, but I truly did not care

I unzipped my backpack and grabbed my show and tell items and showed Cassidy and Hailee first. They were both liked my stuffy’s as they also like My Little Pony just like me. I then went to the alphabet carpet and sat down on the letter K which had a picture of a kite on it. My classmates slowly came and sat down with me. I looked around the colorful classroom and saw many things that amazed me. I then looked at all my classmates and saw how we all looked different from each other.

But I couldn’t wait to show all of my classmates my My Little Pony stuffy’s that I brought, as I saw all my classmates as friends. As show and tell begins I paid close attention and listened closely to what everyone brought to show. Many different items like tractors, books, dolls, and even some rocks. It was finally my turn to show my item, all of us girls bonded over my My Little Ponies stuffy’s while the boys didn’t bother to care, but what do you expect from boys. Seeing how everyone is different we all can talk to each other about the items we brought, as it does not matter what you look like. As everyone in my class was going to be my friend.

  1. Hey Kelsey, as I read your story, I really felt like I was there with you the entire time! You did an amazing job at creating the mental picture. I can relate when you stated when you looked at your classmates, you say how everyone is different. I think that is something that is particularly important to teach kids at a younger grade that everyone is different and that is a normal thing. You did a great job at not having too much back story. The items that the other children brought have a representation of who they are, show and tell is a great way to start off class and not have to worry about the children not liking each other. I can relate to all the girls bonding over your My Little Pony’s and the boys not caring! Your story was well written, and I loved reading it.
